“Wise is drafted by Seattle Seahawks: Deatrich Wendell Wise, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dero Wise of Rt. C, Evergreen, is an advance senior at Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss. with a major in physical education and a minor in biology. Wise is a dean’s list scholar with a GPA of 3.66.
“He has received numerous honors and awards as a football player for the JSU Blue Bengal Tigers, the team that dominates the SWAC (South West Athletic Conference). He has been a first round participant in the NCAA Division I-AA football championship in 1985, 1986 and 1987. In August of 1987, he traveled with the SWAC Football Press Tour Conference and was on TV Channels 12 and 8 speaking in behalf of this conference.
“On April 26, he was in the NFL College Draft. Wise was the seventh pick in the ninth round for the Seattle Seahawks. He leaves on Sun., May 8, for the Seahawks predraft camp.”
“Carmen Salter will ride Spanish Smokey in the Evergreen Saddle Club’s free horse show Saturday at the Evergreen Municipal Park starting at 4 p.m. The concession booths will be manned by the 4-H Clubs. Everyone is invited to come enjoy the show and help support the 4-H Clubs.”

“Hi-Lites of E.H.S.: Mike Windham of the Evergreen Aggies hit a grand slam home run to tie Lyeffion in the first game of the season. The game was called in the bottom of eight because of darkness. Coach Wise, Aggie head coach, said, ‘We need a little of getting it together, but in the next game we’ll have it. We got a real good team this year, and we’re going to do just fine.’ The next game is against Repton.”
“Sparta QB Club awards banquet is Monday night: The Sparta Academy Quarterback Club will hold its second annual awards banquet at 7:30 Monday night at the Holiday Inn. Academic and athletic awards will be presented and letters will be awarded in all sports.
“Featured speaker will be Cliff Harper, assistant commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. Harper was principal of Evergreen High School right after World War II and left that position to serve as executive secretary of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
“Under Harper’s leadership, the AHSAA developed into one of the strongest in the nation, and he won national recognition serving as chairman of the national rules committee on several occasions. A recognized authority on basketball rules, he conducts clinics all across the United States.

“Hi-Lites of E.H.S.: Evergreen vs. Lyeffion: On Tues., April 22, the Lyeffion baseball team played the Evergreen Aggies. Evergreen got nine hits to Lyeffion’s five. The Aggies scored nine runs to Lyeffion’s four runs. Tucker was the winning pitcher. The losing pitcher was Dees.”
“Junior League Starts Play Next Friday: The Evergreen Junior Leagues, American and National, will open the 1958 season Fri., May 12.
“The complete season schedule and complete team rosters will be carried in next week’s Courant. Time and space limitations caused the postponement of these which were scheduled for today.
“The leagues held their player auction Friday night at the courthouse. All teams are practicing daily in preparation for the season openers.
“The Courant will give complete coverage of the games again this year.”
“The Annual May Day activities are slated for Fri., May 2, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Conecuh County Training School playground area.
“Team games are planned as follows: 100-yard dash (boys); 50-yard dash (girls); baseball throw (girls); relays (220); broad jump, high jump and egg race.”
