“Boy Scouts Will Cook, Shannon Pugh, Brent Salter and Clint Hyde of Evergreen Troop 40, and Chris Lanier and Glen Lanier of Castleberry Troop 225 and Troop 40 Scoutmaster Pat Poole are shown as they prepared to leave for the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. Poole was chosen as one of the Scoutmasters of the contingent of 75 Scouts from the Gulf Coast Council who are attending the jamboree. Gulf Coast Council stretches from Panama City to Pensacola and includes Conecuh, Escambia and Monroe counties, Alabama. Jamborees are held every four years and 35,000 Boy Scouts and 3,000 adult leaders are attending.”

“County Coroner Danny Garnett congratulates Jeff Armstrong, 25, whose prompt action saved a youngster’s life at the Carver Recreation Center Swimming Pool on July 14. Armstrong was the lifeguard on duty at the pool when his cousin, Trey Barlow, 5, had a seizure. Armstrong pulled the youngster from the pool, got the water out of his lungs and got him breathing again. The victim was taken to Evergreen Hospital and then transferred to a Montgomery hospital in critical condition, but is doing okay now. Garnett credits Armstrong’s prompt action and trained procedures with saving the youngster’s life.”

“The Lyeffion Stars Softball Team won third place in the Brewton Invitational Tournament on July 27. The Stars are Manager James R. Robinson, Jimmy Lambert, Eugene Powell, Sid Lambert and Jerry Johnson and David Daniels, Donnie Brewton, Doug Williams, Tommy Johnson, Ed Smith, Forrest Simpson. Buddy Monroe was not present for the picture.”

“Tickets on sale reserved seats Warrior games: Season tickets for reserved seats for all five Sparta Academy Warriors home games are now on sale. Tickets are $15 each and guarantee the purchaser a seat between the 40-yard lines on the home side of the field.
“You may purchase season tickets for reserved seats by making out your check to Sparta Academy Quarterback Club and mailing to P.O. Box 391, Evergreen, Ala., 36401. Aug. 20 is the final date reserved seat tickets may be purchased.
“Home games and dates are: Sept. 6, South Butler; Sept. 26, Monroe Academy; Oct. 11, Escambia Academy; Oct. 25, Thomasville Academy; and Nov. 8, Grove Hill Academy.”

“Clinton Jackson represents U.S. in world boxing: Clinton Jackson, welterweight from Evergreen, has been chosen to represent the United States in the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Havana, Cuba Aug. 12-31. He recently won the U.S. Championship in his weight class.
“Jackson is practicing with the U.S. team at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Marine Corps Base now and will leave from there Aug. 12 for Cuba.
“Some of the preliminary bouts and all the semifinals and finals will be shown on ABC Wide World of Sports on television starting Aug. 24.”

“Sparta sending cheerleaders to TSU Clinic: The cheerleaders from Sparta Academy attending Cheerleaders Clinic at Troy State University, Troy, the week of Aug. 11 through 16 are Jane Carleton, Susan Jeffries, Lisa Poole, Nancy Price, Debra Ward, Tammie Barlow, Leanne Tanner and Kathy Cotton.
“Sponsors attending are Mrs. W.W. Jeffries and Mrs. Kathleen Owen.”

“The Repton High School Cheerleaders, Patsy Watson, Wanda Andrews, Melanie Evers, Jane Brown, Racheal Watson, Debbie Ivey, Debbie Bell and Sheila Blackwell, attended the cheerleader clinic at Tuscaloosa last week.”

“Coaching Clinic set in Atmore: The Escambia County High School is sponsoring a Football Coaching Clinic on Aug. 10 for all coaches in the area, high school, junior high, pee wee and little league. The program gets underway at 9:30 a.m. and there is no admission charge.
“The annual ‘Mac Mays Fish Fry’ will be held at 6 p.m. at the Escambia County High School in conjunction with the clinic.
“Guests will include Bubba Scott, executive secretary of the Alabama Athletic Association; Jim Goostree, trainer at the University of Alabama; Hayden Riley, University of Alabama assistant coach; William Travis, Dean of Faulkner State Junior College.
“Guests will also include Hal Biggs, World Sporting Goods; and coaches, Lyle Underwood, Bay Minette; Lee Holiday, Excel; W.C. Majors, Fairhope; Dave Salter, W.S. Neal; and Frank Colten, T.R. Miller.”

“Mrs. A.C. French entertained her Sunday School Class at a swimming party Monday evening at Binion’s Pool.
“Members of the class are: Lee Stallworth, Maxine Smith, Hattie Lou Brantley, Mattie Dean, Joyce Congleton and Joe Andrews, Perry Wilson and Robert Kelly.”

“The Evergreen Baptist Sunday School enjoyed a picnic at Binion’s Pool on Thursday afternoon of last week.
“Swimming was diversion and later in the afternoon a bountiful and tempting picnic supper was spread for the 75 or more who were present.”
