One Conecuh County team left in hunt for state basketball title

High school basketball is winding down in Conecuh County. We’ve got one team left in the hunt for a state title, Hillcrest High School’s varsity boys team.

The Jags won the regular season area title and played for the area tournament title Monday night. The Jags are assured of a spot in the sub-regional round of the playoffs and when they win that game they’ll move on to the regional tournament.

The Jags have a good shot of extending their season, and here’s hoping that they top their outstanding performance in the playoffs last season.

In the pro sports world all eyes are now on the NBA since the NFL season has come to an end and the Major League Baseball season is still weeks away.

Despite the labor dispute in the preseason, the NBA is looking pretty healthy these days. As of this writing, 17 of the league’s 30 teams had winning records.

Philadelphia, Miami and Chicago were leading the three divisions in the Eastern Conference. San Antonio, Oklahoma City and the L.A. Clippers were atop the three divisions in the Western Conference.

Lots of folks in our neck of the woods like the Atlanta Hawks. They aren’t doing too bad either. They’re in second place in their division and two games out of first behind the Miami Heat.

I’ve always pulled for the Celtics in the Eastern Conference, but my favorite team of all is the New Orleans Hornets. Quite naturally, the Hornets are in last place in the Western Conference’s Southwest Division and have the league’s second worst overall record.

With that said, the start of the Major League Baseball season is just around the corner. Most full squads will report for spring training on Fri., Feb. 24, in preparation for Opening Night and Opening Day games on April 4-5.

The Atlanta Braves will open their season against the New York Mets on Thurs., April 5, in New York. Atlanta will play its home-opener on Fri., April 13, when they play the Brewers in Atlanta.

The good people at the state tourism office released this week their list of Top 10 Events of March, and this month’s list included one sports-related event.

The only sporting event to make the Top 10 list for next month was the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, Presented by Legacy Credit Union. That event will be held March 30-April 1 at the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham.

This event brings nearly 80,000 fans from around the world to watch drivers of the IZOD IndyCar Series compete in the 17-turn, 2.38-mile road course. In addition to the big race, fans will also get to watch the Grand-Am Road Racing Series Porsche 250 race and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The weekend will also feature “Fan Walks” on pit lane, an interactive “Fan Zone” with a ferris wheel and autograph sessions with the drivers. Drivers expected to take part in the event include Marco Andretti, Helio Castroneves, Dario Franchiiti and Will Power.
