“Evergreen received a visit from Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman last Friday afternoon. Siegelman visited Evergreen as a part of a statewide campaign to boost the economic development for Alabama. His tour was to assist Alabama cities in trying to land Tier One Hyundai Suppliers in the coming months.
“The governor flew into Middleton Field at 4 p.m. and made a few brief remarks. He told those present that he wanted them to pretend he was a visiting executive from a company looking for a site to expand their operations.
“The 30 to 40 people present were chauffeured in vans provided by the Great Nazarene Baptist Church and Reid State Technical College.”

“Mary Hamilton Robinson is the valedictorian of Sparta Academy’s Class of 2002. Sarah Rossling McGloon is the salutatorian of Sparta Academy’s Class of 2002.”

“All former and present principals, teachers and parents of Evergreen City School are invited to attend a Farewell Celebration of Evergreen City School on Wed., May 22, 2002 at 9 a.m. in the school’s auditorium.”

“The Conecuh County Commission took a big step toward improving the accountability of funds at the meeting Monday morning. A new purchasing policy was discussed and approved by the commission that will require purchase requisitions for items costing over $250.”

“Earl Windham reports three nice showers: .83 of an inch on May 14; .28 on May 15; and .96 on May 17.”

“Sparta Academy honor students of the Class of 1987 are Baby Girl Floyd, salutatorian, Addrian Brooks, valedictorian and Tim Wilson and Renita Frazier, Jason West and Lynn Ralls.”

“The Evergreen City Council at its meeting Tuesday night authorized Ray Hogg of Hogg Engineering, consultant for the city, to apply to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs for a Community Development Block Grant (from the Special Fund) of $200,000 for sanitation and sewer improvement lines for Highway 83. The city would match the grant with $75,000, paid $16,160 in cash and $58,840 in kind service.”

“The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Dawn Baggett has been named a United States National Award winner in Science.”

“Staff Sergeant Randy R. Hildreth, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Hildreth of Rt. C, Evergreen has been awarded the U.S. Air Force Achievement Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) by Colonel Thomas E. Peot, 4461st Support Group Commander, for Meritorious Service from 23 June 1985 to 11 January 1987.”

“Conecuh County Elementary Teacher of the Year for 1986-87 is Mrs. Gloria Hartley. Mrs. Hartley has been a sixth-grade teacher at Marshall Middle School for the past nine years.”

“U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. – Cadet Candidate James W. Coburn, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Coburn of Rt. C, Evergreen has graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School.
“A 1971 graduate of Evergreen High School, he attended Jefferson Davis Junior College, Brewton.”

“Repton received their Rural Fire Defense vehicle through the Alabama Forestry Commission last week, it is announced by Hubert Fisher, Fire Chief, and Conecuh County Ranger Dwight Taylor.”

“Crawford King has been named Valedictorian and Beth Harper the Salutatorian of Sparta Academy’s first graduating class. Crawford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James C. King of Evergreen. Beth is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Harper of Evergreen.”

“Danny Covin, principal of Lyeffion High School, announced today the selection of the school’s students who have been chosen as members of The Society of Outstanding High School Students, the country’s leading high school honorary. The students honored are Laura Oakley and Ellis Golson.”

“2ND LARGEST PULLOUT: Saigon – The U.S. Command has ordered its second largest pullout of American troops from the war zone with the deactivation of 42 Air Force and Army units which number 5,700 men.”

“Ku Klux Klan Meets Here Saturday Night: A crowd estimated at about 1,000 persons gathered here Saturday night for the Ku Klux Klan meeting held on the vacant lot at the intersection of Cooper and Court Streets.
“Rev. Alvin Horne, State Grand Dragon, made the principal speech. Klansman Herren of Georgiana also made a talk.
“Before the meeting, a mile long parade of Klansmen in full regalia drove through Evergreen streets. Most of the cars in the parade were from out of town.
“Three crosses were burned at the speakers platform. A klan spokesman emphasized that these were the only crosses burned.”

“Local Board No. 18, Selective Service System, is seeking the whereabouts of two registrants. Anyone having any information concerning these registrants is requested to contact the board immediately.
“Their names and last known addresses are Jesse Lee Lewis, So. Park St., Evergreen, Ala., and James Clarence Jackson, Cemetery Ave., Evergreen, Ala.”

“The baccalaureate sermon for Evergreen High School will be held in the school auditorium Sun., May 19, at 4:30 p.m. according to an announcement by C.W. Claybrook, principal. Rev. Harry Engle will be the speaker.
“Graduation exercises will be held in the gymnasium Friday night, May 24, at 8 p.m. Dr. C.M. Dannelly, Montgomery County Superintendent of Education, will be the guest speaker.”

MAY 21, 1942

“TWO PLANES FORCED DOWN NEAR HERE: Two army planes made forced landings on the farm of J.E. Parker several miles north of here last (Wednesday) night. According to reports, neither of the pilots sustained injuries beyond bruises and scratches. One of the planes was badly wrecked. Mr. Parker brought the pilots to Evergreen where they were given medical attention. The Courant was not able to secure the names of the men, nor any details of why they were forced to make landings.”

“Streamline Diesel Engine Pulls No. 1: Did you hear a funny sounding whistle passing through Evergreen Wednesday between 12 and 1 o’clock? Well, it was on the new streamline Diesel electric engine which was pulling L&N Train No. 1. The L&N recently bought 12 of these engines to use on passenger runs and the one passing through here Wednesday was making its initial run.”

“FRANK H. KING GETS PROMOTION IN NAVY: The Commandant of the Fourteenth Naval District, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, has announced that Frank H. King, Route No. 1, Evergreen, Ala. has been promoted to Aviation Metalsmith Second Class, USN.
“King enlisted in the Navy June 5, 1940. Since Jan. 29, 1941, he has been on duty somewhere in the Hawaiian area under the command of Capt. J.M. Shoemaker, USN.”

“Pvt. Billy F. Hyde spent the past weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Hyde. His friends will be interested to know he has been transferred from Shepherd Field, Texas to Maxwell Field.”
