FIVE YEARS AGO
DEC. 13, 2007

“Hillcrest’s varsity boys basketball team closed out its annual trip to Monroe County High School’s Hub City Classic Tournament with a 64-30 win over the Frisco City Whippets Saturday night in Monroeville.
“In addition to Hillcrest’s 34-point win, Destin Gross, a Hillcrest junior, was named to the all-tournament team during a post-game ceremony Saturday night.”

“In a battle of Top 10 teams Friday night in Mobile, Sparta Academy’s varsity girls basketball team came up short in a 66-47 loss to home-standing Faith Academy. Class 2A Sparta entered Friday night’s game as the state’s fourth-ranked AISA team, and Class 3A Faith entered the game ranked third in the AISA.
“Susan Ann Cook, a 5-foot-7 senior, led the Lady Warriors with 12 points. BreAnna Pate followed with nine points. Christin Booker and Mallory Kendrick finished the game with eight points each.”
Other standout Sparta players in that game included Hayden Armuelles, Camarena Godwin, Morgan Harden, Erica Palmer and Ashton Raines.

“Sparta Academy’s Chris Cinereski combined for 45 total points to lead the Warriors’ varsity boys basketball team in recent action against Faith Academy and Southern Academy.”
Other standout Sparta players that season included Mason Black, D.J. Buckhault, Brannon Jordan, Drayton Rodgers and J.R. Williams.

DEC. 10, 1992

“Warriors explode in second half to take Vols 65-47: Junior guard Britt Ward scored 30 points leading the Sparta Academy Warriors’ basketball team to a 65-47 victory over Monroe Academy last Tuesday night.
“Chris Pate also scored in double figures with 14 points in the game against the Volunteers.
“According to Byron Warren Jr., sports information director for Sparta Academy, the first half was a defensive struggle with neither team being able to generate much in the way of offense. Sparta held a 21-18 lead at halftime.
“But the second half was a different story as the Warriors out-scored the Volunteers 44-29 to clinch the victory.
“The Warriors will play in the Greenville Academy tournament tonight (Thursday) and Friday.
“Scoring summary as follows: Britt Ward, 30; Chris Pate, 14; McPherson Cook, six; Bryant Robinson, five; Terry Conway, three; Casey Grant, three; Brian Gorum, two; Chip Gibson, one; Reggie Kendrick, one.”

“Scouts from Evergreen’s Troop 40 recently attended the Fall Jamboree at Claiborne Lock and Dam. Pictured are Jimmy Higdon, Chris Vargas, Danny Vargas, Jacob Brooks, Jesse Pitts, Kevin Rogers, Keith Kent, Josh Miller, Scoutmaster Pat Poole, D.J. Barnes, Robert Tolbert, Steven Kendrick, Joey Brooks, Will Lanier, Clint Casey, Michael Landon, Chris Adams and Jeremy Risher.”

35 YEARS AGO
DEC. 8, 1977

“David Thomas, former Evergreen High School Aggies star, is one of the leaders of the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks basketball team. Thomas scored 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Gamecocks to a recent 76-72 win over the West Georgia College Braves.
“Davis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Thomas Jr. of Evergreen.”

“The Evergreen High Aggies started off by defeating Georgiana 35-29 Tuesday night of last week. The Aggies were led by guard Ernest Williams and forward Terry Floyd. Williams had 12 points and Floyd 11. Terry also snagged seven rebounds and three ball steals.
“Others who contributed to Evergreen’s win were James Straughn with six points, Tony Rodgers four points and eight rebounds and Joseph Mitchell two points.”
Other outstanding players on Evergreen’s team that year included Michael Floyd and William McCreary.

“Sparta Academy’s unbeaten Warriors won their fifth victory of the young basketball season when they downed Greenville Academy 65-51 Tuesday night.
“Big Bobby Padgett dominated the boards as he pulled down 21 rebounds and scored 15 points to lead the victory over the Tornadoes. Gray Stevens had 16, Terry Peacock, 14; Johnny Ralls, 10; Steve Dubose, six; and John Hall and Tony Raines, two each.
“Terry Shipp scored 16 points, but the ‘B’ team lost to Greenville, 35-30. Sparta’s girls edged the Tornadoes 24-21.”

50 YEARS AGO
DEC. 13, 1962

“Castleberry Sets Basketball Meet: The annual Conecuh County Invitational Tournament will be held this year at Conecuh County High School in Castleberry on Dec. 19 and 20.
“Eight teams are participating: T.R. Miller of Brewton, Georgiana, Beatrice, Excel, Repton, Lyeffion, Moore Academy of Pineapple and Conecuh County High.”

“The Evergreen Aggies downed the T.R. Miller Tigers 47-38 Saturday night in Evergreen.
“Jimmy Raines led the win with 12 points and seven rebounds. Sid Lambert tallied 11 points for the victors.”
Other outstanding Evergreen basketball players that year included Scott Cook, Larry Ellis, Ronnie Jackson, Donnie Jones, Ronnie Jones, Willie Mack Pate, Winston Pugh and Joe Sasser.

“Holiday Tourney Is Set At E.H.S. Dec. 17, 18, 20: The first annual Holiday Invitational basketball tournament will be held at Memorial Gymnasium at Evergreen High School on Dec. 17, 18 and 20. Six outstanding teams of this area will compete.”
Teams in the tourney included Escambia County High School of Atmore, Evergreen, Georgiana, Greenville, Monroeville and J.U. Blacksher of Uriah.

“Coach Wayne Pope’s Conecuh County High Blue Devils ripped Repton’s Bulldogs 52 to 11 Tuesday night in Castleberry.
“Tall Henry Foster set the pace for the victors with 18 points. Larry Jones tossed in 11, Sims and Finley had eight each; Kast, four; Glass, two; and Ellis, one.
“George Morris led Repton with five points. Dibella had four and Robinson, two.”

65 YEARS AGO
DEC. 11, 1947

“The Evergreen High Cagers will open an impressive 22-game schedule here Friday night against W.S. Neal High of East Brewton. The ‘B’ game will get underway at 7 p.m. at Evergreen High auditorium with the varsity game following.
“Coach Hart will build his team around five lettermen returning from last year’s squad. These boys are Mickey Logue and Gillis Jones who both were starters last year and Georgie Brown, Benton Carpenter and Billy Carpenter, all lettermen.
“Four members of last year’s championship junior team are now candidates for the varsity. They are Bobby Frank Snowden, Jack Cunningham, Guerry Moorer and Dickey Bozeman. John Greel Ralls, who played with the Brooklyn Juniors last year, Johnny Nielsen, John Law Robinson, Sammy Hanks, James Ryan and Hillman Davis are also experienced players out for the team. Others without much experience are Taylor, Monk, Stuckey, Sanders, Barfield, T. White and Lee.”

“The Lyeffion Yellowjackets dropped their second start of the season to a fast-breaking Excel quintet in Excel Tuesday night, 27 to 18.
“Petty with 11 and Myric with 10 paced the Excel squad. Jones had six points to lead the Yellowjackets with Hardy close behind him with five.”
