JAN. 8, 1998

“Construction on the new KFC and Taco Bell is moving along at a fast pace. The new eating establishment is going to be located in the building where CMC Home Fashions was previously located. The opening date for the restaurant should be announced in the near future.”

“Total rainfall for the month of December was 5.93 inches.”

“Conecuh County Tax Collector Jim Burden’s office came into question last week following an audit by the state into his handling of funds, after the audit revealed he diverted public funds to cover personal checks.
“Each time he did this, the audit clearly states he repaid the money.”

“The Evergreen-Conecuh County Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual banquet on Thurs., Jan. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at Hillcrest High School. The Chamber invites everyone to attend this gala affair as they celebrate their 1997 accomplishments and forge ahead toward 1998 goals.
“In celebration of a banner year, the Chamber banquet entertainment will be provided by a popular trio – Three on a String. Their three part harmony promises a unique and pleasing blend from a heart-rendering country song to an unexpected acappella rendition.
“The group travels throughout the United States and Canada and have been asked to return to many engagements. They have worked with top name performers such as Bill Cosby, Red Skelton, Ray Stevens, the Oak Ridge Boys, Ronald Reagan and George Bush.”

JAN. 13, 1983

“The Courant’s faithful weatherman, Earl Windham, has been a ‘little bit under the weather’ himself for a couple of weeks… and that explains why he hasn’t ‘picked on’ Judge Frank Salter, Dennis Majors and the country editor. This week, ‘Ole Earl’ just turned in a routine report that said it rained .70 of an inch on Jan. 2 and .39 on Jan. 3.”

“The U.S. Flag of Tommy Harper is being flown over the Evergreen-Conecuh County Public Library in honor of him and all other deceased veterans in Conecuh County.
“The late Tommy Harper served as a private with Co. F, 8th Battalion, Replacement Center. He entered service on Sept. 6, 1918 at Evergreen, and was honored discharged Dec. 30, 1918 at Camp Pike, Ark.”

“Miss Landra Padgett, age three, was crowned Miss Winter Beauty Queen in the 2 to 3 years age group at the annual pageant held in Frisco City on Dec. 6.”

“The Evergreen Chamber of Commerce announces today that its annual Promotion Banquet will be held Friday night, Jan. 21, at seven o’clock at the historic old L&N Railroad Depot, owned by the Murder Creek Historical Society.
“Dr. Stanley Wilson, Vice President for Agriculture, Home Economics and Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University, will be the guest speaker for the evening.”

JAN. 11, 1968

“Troy Smith of Smith’s Interstate Ambulance Service announces this week that he now has two ambulances to serve this area even better than before. The ambulances operate out of Smith’s Interstate Gulf Service Station located at the Interstate 65 and Highway 84 interchange at Fairview and will speedily answer calls any hour of the day or night. Both ambulances are fully equipped for all types service.”

“U.S. Army, Vietnam - Army Staff Sgt. James E. Coburn, 26, son of Mrs. Lillie M. Coburn, 251 Pecan St., Evergreen, is taking part in ‘Operation Yellowstone’ in Vietnam, with the 25th Infantry Division.
“The operation began Dec. 8 in an area of heavy jungle 60 miles northwest of Saigon known as War Zone C.
“Search and destroy missions are being conducted in the area with support helicopters, artillery, armor and mechanized units.
“Sgt. Coburn is a squad leader in Co. B, 2nd Battalion of the division’s 12th Infantry near Dau Tieng.”

“Lambert C. Mims, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the City of Mobile, will be the guest speaker at the Evergreen Baptist Church on Sunday morning at 11 o’clock. The church is observing Men’s Day under sponsorship of the Brotherhood.
“Mims is a native of Uriah and an active businessman and public official. He is the youngest man ever elected to the Mobile City Commission and will begin his term as Mayor of that city (the office is rotated among three commission members) in May of this year.”

JAN. 8, 1953

“Councilman Aubrey Griffin was named as the member of the Evergreen City Council to serve on the Evergreen Planning Commission by Mayor Vernon B. Millsap at the council meeting Tuesday night in the City Hall. Knud Nielsen, head of the Knud Nielsen Co. and prominent young civic leader, was also appointed a member of the commission.”

“Still No Black Gold in Conecuh; Cashion Co. Drills Third Dry Hole: The Lyle Cashion Co. brought drilling operations to a halt early this week on its third Conecuh County well without a show of oil. According to reliable reports received by The Courant, drillers went to a depth of around 5,000 feet before declaring the well a dry hole.
“The well was drilled near the home of Herbert Culbreth and is in the same general vicinity of two other dry holes drilled in the past two months by the Cashion Co. The first well was located on the property of Jack Godwin and the second on the property of T.E. McMillan. It is said that all three are within a radius of about one mile.
“Company officials had not announced any immediate plans for further drilling in this area as story was written.”

“Mrs. George Hamrick, young housewife of the Lyeffion community, sustained painful burns early Wednesday morning at her home while kindling a fire in a wood cook stove with fuel oil. According to information given The Courant, the stove exploded causing flaming oil to be sprayed over Mrs. Hamrick’s body. She was carried to an Andalusia hospital as soon as possible after the accident and her condition is reported to be critical.”

75 YEARS AGO
JAN. 13, 1938

“Formal announcement is being made in this issue of the candidacy of A.E. Johnson, who is seeking re-election to the office of Member of the Board of Revenue from District One of this county. He is now serving his third term in this office.”

“A final dividend amounting to 3.3 percent on deposits and common claims in the Peoples Bank of Evergreen was ordered by the court last week and checks covering this dividend are now being delivered to depositors at the office of J.L. Kelly, liquidating agent on Rural Street. All persons who had money on deposit in the closed bank are requested to call at once and get their checks.”

“The annual convention of the Alabama Press Association will be held in Birmingham, Jan. 13-14, for the election of officers and transaction of other business. Call for the meeting was issued by R.G. Bozeman of Evergreen, president of the organization who said the editors would decide on their annual summer trip.”

“Mrs. Martha Thomas Shaver, 95, pioneer citizen of Herbert passed away peacefully at her home at 6 p.m. Sunday evening after an illness of several years brought on by the infirmities of age. Her death removes one of the county’s oldest and best beloved citizens.
“She was born Feb. 2, 1843 and was married to Dr. W.B. Shaver Jan. 31, 1861. Deceased was born and lived her entire life in the community in which she died.”
