“Hillcrest Jaguars roar to area title: With the area regular season title in hand, the Hillcrest Jaguars are now assured that they will host the 4A Area 4 tournament in Evergreen next week. The Jags clinched the title with a win at Andalusia on Tuesday and completed an undefeated area campaign with a victory over Opp last Friday night at Hillcrest.
“The Bulldogs of Andalusia were trying to pull off the upset and give themselves a shot at the area title. However, the Jags rallied from a sluggish start to steadily pull away for the victory.
“Frank Williams canned three treys and led Hillcrest with 17 points. Chris Hines was next with 11 points and while snaring eight rebounds. Maurice Bradley chipped in with 10 points and Jerry Jackson added nine points to go along with his team-high 10 rebounds.”

“The Jags got back in the win column on Monday at Senior Night with the win over the visiting Bulldogs. And there was a special ceremony between the two varsity games to retire the jersey of Chris ‘C.J. Riley,’ a teammate who lost his life in a Christmas holiday weekend tragedy.”

“Roy Lee Moorer, 99, of 305 Magnolia Ave., Evergreen, died Sat., Jan. 27.
“Mr. Moorer, with his brothers, Oscar and Randolph, and many cousins, comprised the bulwark of the local baseball team in the early 1900s prior to his pitching for the University (of Alabama) in 1911-1912. He later played professional baseball for Evansville in the old ‘Three Eye’ League and for the Birmingham Barons in the Southern Association. His professional career was ended because of a sore arm which resulted from the Birmingham manager’s insistence that he change his pitching style from side arm to overhand, at which time he returned to Evergreen. Until his late sixties he could throw a baseball with effortless grace which bespoke his athletic greatness.
“Mr. Moorer was an avid hunter and fisherman, a trait inherited from his father. Starting his hunting career at the age of 10 and continuing for the next 80 years, he was most noted as a turkey hunter and the number he killed was in the hundreds. In the last several years, national sports magazines have made his turkey hunting prowess the subject of several articles.”

“Roland Dees of Rt. 1, Evergreen, is shown with his son-in-law, Bill Clenney of Milton, who killed this trophy buck Wednesday of last week. The big nine-pointer weighed about 200 pounds.”

“The fifth annual Jefferson Davis Baseball Clinic will be held on Sat., Feb. 3, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. for ages 8-18 in the College Park.”

Bubba Moncrease got 16 and pulled down 27 rebounds. Larry Blackmon poured in 13; Sanders, eight; Philyaw, three; Reed, two; and Melvin Moncrease, two, to round out the Blue Devils scoring.
“The Blue Devil B Team made it a clean sweep for the night by defeating the Bulldog B’s by a score of 36-32 in overtime. Etheridge was high point man for the Devils with 10 points.”

Frazier guided the Taylor, Texas High School football team to a record of 8-2-1 and the District 12AAA South Zone championship. The only losses were to powerhouse Cameron and the district champion Belton Tigers.
“Frazier, an outstanding athlete at Evergreen High School, began his coaching career at Lyeffion High School. Since accepting a position in Texas some years ago, he has established himself as one of the state’s outstanding coaches.”

“Eagles Claw Camden: Last Tuesday evening the CCTS Eagles turned back Camden Academy to the tune of 70-60. The Eagles used a combination of shooting and rebounding by Marvin Jones and Douglas Evans, and the playmaking of Eley Randerson and Robert Martin. Randerson and Martin were particularly effective with their passing and general ball handling skills. Marvin Jones gained the scoring honors with 22 points. Evans was second with 19 valuable points.”

“Eagles Trounce Georgiana: Eley Randerson scored only six points Friday evening, but his passing and ball handling led to many other scores as he led his Eagle teammates to a 58-36 victory over Georgiana.
“The Eagles broke the game wide open in the third quarter as they scored 24 points to Georgiana’s five with Randerson getting more than half the assists, his favorite target being center Douglas Evans who collected 12 points in that quarter.
“The Jones boys, Marvin and Leon, played their usual consistent game. Marvin as usual led the team in scoring with 20 points, Evans was runner-up with 14.”

“The Conecuh County Rattlesnake Convention started Feb. 1, and will continue until Feb. 27, according to Luther McDonald and J.E. ‘Shug’ Skinner, co-chairmen.

There will be prizes for the longest, largest, smallest and the second longest and for the person who has either caught or killed the most.”
