“Handicap Tournament Planned By Golf Club: A handicap tournament has been planned by the Evergreen Golf Club it is announced today by newly elected President C.T. Ivey. Mr. Ivey succeeded L.W. Price Jr. as head of the local golfer’s organization. Mr. Price had served as president for several years.
“The local club is holding the handicap tournament for the first time in several years. Two similar tournaments were held in recent years and proved very popular. Play in this year’s tournament is to get underway Wed., July 21, according to Herman Bolden who is committee chairman.
“In a handicap tournament the better players have to give strokes to those not quite as good so that any player has a good chance of winning the tournament. The handicap strokes make a match between golfers of different quality even.
“Entry fee for this year’s tournament has been set at $1.50. Trophies will be awarded to the winner, runnerup and consolation winners. Losers in first round matches will form a consolation flight and play for the consolation trophy.
“To qualify for the tournament players should turn in their entry fee and post the score they usually shoot by noon, Mon., July 19, to any member of the tournament committee or The Courant office. Committee members are Herman Bolden, G.L. Wilkinson, Bill Gibbons, J.H. Robison, P.L. Pace and Bob Bozeman. This committee will set handicaps from the scores turned in.
“The first matches will be played Wednesday afternoon and everyone must play on this afternoon. After that, each successive match must be played within five days. All club members and any others interested in participating will be welcomed in the tournament.”

“Swimming classes are now being conducted by City Recreation Director Bill Parsons. He can still accept a number of students for instruction in swimming and diving. The classes are being conducted by the City Recreation Department and offered free of charge.”
