“A much needed ‘face lifting’ has been taking place at Evergreen High School this summer. The school plant is getting a good general cleaning, painting and general fixing up thanks to Work Study Program through the State Vocational Education Department. The program totals $3,864 with $966 of that coming from local sources. Principal Roy Davis said the program was made possible through an appropriation of $750 by the Evergreen City Council, the remainder of the local funds coming from the school’s funds. Seven vocational education students at EHS are working 40 hours a week for 12 weeks under the supervision of Davis and Dave Fleming, vo-ed instructor. These pictures give some idea of the work that is going on… Lower left, Ernest Shipp mows the grass at Brooks Stadium which thanks to applications of fertilizer and regular mowing has the best turf in its history.”

“Greenies Edge Florala Here Sunday 8 to 7: Manager Zell Murphy’s Evergreen Greenies bunched their hits effectively to win a slugging match from Florala here Sunday afternoon in Brooks Stadium. The Greenies constructed an 8 to 2 lead then fought off a strong Florala rally in the eighth inning to win 8 to 7.
“J.W. Windham started on the mound for Evergreen and received credit for the win. Edsel Johnson relieved with none out in the eighth and pitched the final two frames. Windham struck out nine batters and Johnson struck out three, retiring the side on strikes after the bases were loaded.
“John Greel Ralls’ booming bat paced the Greenies to the win. Ralls opened the second inning with a homer and homered in the fifth with two men on. He had a perfect evening at the plate with three hits in as many trips and knocked in four Greenie runs. No other Greenie hitter got more than one safety.
“Florala outhit the locals, 12 to 9, but didn’t use their hits as well. Ward had three hits in five attempts including a triple led the hitters. McNeal and Cummings both had two hits. Bartlow was the losing pitcher. He gave up nine hits and struck out eight Greenie batters.
“The Greenies do not have a game scheduled for this Sunday, Manager Murphy states.”

“Alabama Dove Season Will Be Split Again: An announcement has been received by the State Department of Conservation from Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay that Alabama will have another split dove season in 1953-54.
“The first portion of the season for hunting of doves will open Oct. 17 and close Oct. 31; the latter part will open Dec. 27 and close Jan. 10. The creel limit for doves will be eight per day or in possession at any one time. Shooting will be allowed from 12 noon until sunset during days of the open season.
“McKay’s announcement stated that waterfowl seasons for flyways in the United States will be announced in late August.”

“1953-54 Hunting Season Announced By State: Montgomery, Ala., July – New hunting, fishing and fur seasons for 1953-54 were announced here today by Alabama’s Conservation Advisory Board. Major changes from last year’s seasons include a statewide squirrel season from Nov. 1 to Jan. 1 and opening of the beaver trapping and deer hunting seasons in some new areas of the state.
“The new squirrel season eliminates the split season in Alabama. In the past, the state has opened north Alabama squirrel hunting Oct. 15-Dec. 15 and that in south Alabama Nov. 1-Jan. 1.
“Biologists of the Conservation Department’s Game and Fish Division recommended the change in the squirrel season because after October the parasites, such as ‘wolves,’ leave the squirrels in this state. Research also shows that there is ‘not enough difference in geological and climatic conditions in the two sections of the state to warrant a split squirrel season.’
“Biologists advised the Conservation Board that from a biological standpoint, squirrels should not be hunted before Nov. 1 because any females are still suckling young of the year. A fourth point in favor of the new season was ‘to give all hunters in the state a chance to hunt during the Christmas holidays.”

“Locals Win Close One From Panama City Tues.: The local baseball team came off victor in one of the closest and best games seen on the local diamond this season when it took the aggregation from Panama City in tow Tuesday afternoon to the tune of 1 to 0. Beaugez on the mound for the locals probably delivered one of the best performances of his career, keeping the hits of his opponents well scattered and striking out batters when such was most needed. His teammates gave him airtight support in the field and succeeded in bunching hits to bring in the winning tally. Bequgez gave up a total of eight hits but they were well scattered and failed to bring in a run for Panama City. He gave two bases on balls and struckout six.
“Cobb, who pitched for the visitors, yielded only six hits to the locals. He walked two and struckout three.
“Evergreen plays Troy at Troy this afternoon. Fri., Aug. 6, they return home to play Andalusia. Sat., Aug. 7, they play Andalusia in Andalusia, Sun., Aug. 8, they play Dothan in Dothan. Mon., Aug. 9, Dothan is here for a game. Tues., Aug. 10, the locals are in Troy. Wed., Aug. 11, Troy plays here. Tues., Aug. 12, Panama City plays Evergreen here.
“Mitchell, first baseman, and Goetz, pitcher, who have been out this week because of injuries are expected back in the lineup Friday.
“The Courant is requested to announce to local fans that a number of interested citizens have agreed among themselves to see that the team finish the season despite the fact the gate receipts have not been sufficient to pay expenses. These men are anxious for Evergreen to keep the franchise in the league and by next year put out a strong team with the necessary financial backing to assure it a successful season.”
