Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .18 inches of rain on Nov. 30, 1.85 inches on Dec. 1, .15 inches on Dec. 2 and .02 inches on Dec. 4. He also reported a high temperature of 70 degrees on Dec. 2 and a low of 29 degrees on Dec. 5.

“Riley Earl Powell, age 73, died Thurs., Dec. 3, 2009, in an Evergreen hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Conecuh County. He served as a Constable for Beat 5 in Conecuh County for about six years and was an Auxiliary Police Officer for the Town of Castleberry.”

“Steve Dunn of Conecuh County, Jake Harper of Wilcox County and Dean Wysner of Randolph County each retained their positions as officers with the Alabama Farmers Federation during elections Monday at the organization’s 88th annual meeting in Mobile.”

“Monroe County Hospital is proud to announce that Dr. Salem Saloom, FACS/Board Certified General Surgeon, is joining MCH Surgery Clinic.”

“Conecuh County lost one its most honored and influential citizens on Tuesday of last week with the passing of longtime local educator, Edith Armstead Gray.
“Gray was born on Nov. 19, 1910 in Galveston, Texas to Henry and Millie Williams Armstead. She was the last and longest surviving member of her family when she died at home on Dec. 1, 2009 with her children at her bedside.”

Local weather reporter Harry Ellis reported .60 inches of rain on Nov. 28, .73 inches on Nov. 29, 1.80 inches on Dec. 3 and .12 inches on Dec. 4. He reported a high of 71 on Dec. 4 and lows of 34 on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Total rainfall for November 1994 was 2.77 inches.

“Santa Claus coming to town this Saturday; parade set for 4 p.m.: The Chamber of Commerce is anticipating this year’s parade to be the largest parade held in many years.”

“First Alabama Bank Vice President Pam Hammonds and Chamber representative Quenia Brantley are shown next to the Angel Tree in the Chamber of Commerce Office. Hammonds and her husband, Wayne, were one of the first people to take a child’s name off the tree and buy Christmas presents for them. Everyone is encouraged to come by the Chamber office and help out with this worthwhile project.”

“This year the Chamber of Commerce has added a special touch to Christmas 1994 by displaying ‘The Angel Tree.’ The 10-foot tree was donated to the Chamber by Evergreen Industries and is located at the Chamber office, 100 Depot Square. Fifty names were given to the tree by the Department of Human Resources.”

Local weather reporter Earl Windham reported 1.25 inches of rain on Dec. 5 and .29 on Dec. 6. He reported a high of 68 on Dec. 6 and low of 24 on Dec. 4.

“Lesa Ralls is Sparta Academy’s Miss Alpha of 1980 and will be featured in the school’s annual. Lesa was crowned to climax the Miss Alpha Pageant held at the school gymnatorium Friday night.”

“Marilyn Booker of Conecuh County High of Castleberry reigned as Queen Joy at the Christmas Parade here Wednesday of last week. Reta Mixon of Sparta Academy was first alternate and Donna Bolton of Evergreen High second alternate.”

“Robert G. Bozeman Jr. of Evergreen was re-elected Chairman of the Cross Trails Regional Library Board at its annual meeting.”

“The Gideons held a dedication service last Friday at the newly opened Days Inn Motel on Ted Bates Road, and then placed Bibles in each motel room. Taking part in the service were L.T. Blanton, member of the Gideons; John G. Ralls, owner of the motel; and D.C. Hutcheson, J.T. Galloway, Jimmy Conway and G.C. Feaster, all members of the Gideons.”

“Navy Yeoman Third Class George L. Crosby, whose wife, JoAnne, is the daughter of William L. McCreary of Rt. F, Evergreen, has deployed to the Indian Ocean.
“He is a crewmember aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Jouett, homeported in San Diego, and currently operating as a unit of the U.S. 7th Fleet.”

“Hank Williams show to be seen here: ‘Country Music on Broadway’ featuring Audrey Williams, widow of all-time great country music singer and composer, Hank Williams, and son, Hank Jr., will play at the Pix Theatre here Dec. 13, 14, 15 and 16, according to Mrs. Mike Trahan, manager.
“Both Audrey and Hank Jr. sing in the picture and Hank Snow shows Hank Jr. a home movie in which Hank Williams sings one of his greatest hits.”

“Lovely Jane McIntyre, a statuesque brunette, reigned over the 1964 Conecuh County Christmas Carnival here last Wednesday afternoon. She was crowned Queen Joy on Tuesday evening. “A blonde beauty from Conecuh County High School at Castleberry, Jerry Green, was crowned Princess Merry during the coronation program at the Evergreen City School.
“The court of honor was composed of Judy Brooks and Lorraine Jordan of Repton High School, Carol Hamrac and Jena Kendrick of Lyeffion High School, Wanda Benefield of Conecuh County High and Sue Griffin of Evergreen High. They rode with the Queen and Princess on the Chamber of Commerce’s beautiful float in the parade.”

“Evergreen Mayor W.H. Sessions congratulates Bill Horton who received the trophy as the most outstanding cadet of the Evergreen Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol. The trophy was awarded at the CAP’s annual banquet at the Recreation Center last Thursday night. Looking on is Squadron Commander Lee F. Smith.”

“Repton School to get distinguished flag: Congressman George Grant will present a ‘distinguished’ American flag to the Repton High School at 10 a.m. on Fri., Dec. 16. “This flag was flown above the national Capitol in Washington as is attested by a signed statement of the national architect, which accompanies the flag.”

“An early morning fire of unknown origin completely destroyed an old residence generally known around town as the Frank Simmons place. The residence, property of W.K. Horton, was located on Desplous St., opposite the Methodist Church.”

“The Deagan Chimes recently given to the Methodist Church by Mrs. Verna Millsap, will be dedicated on Sunday evening at 5 p.m., at which time John M. Brock of Pensacola will play an organ and chime concert of Christmas music.
“The gift of the chimes included also a Norton Amplification System for tower broadcasting.
“It was barely more than a year ago that the Methodist Church dedicated their new Moeller pipe organ.”

“The Pix Theatre will hold a free benefit show for children on Saturday morning, Dec. 17, at nine o’clock, it was announced this week by Manager Lamar Goldwire. Admission to this show for all children is an old or new toy or a can of food, the Pix manager explained.
“The Pix is holding the show in cooperation with the Evergreen Kiwanis Club and the Conecuh County Welfare Departments. All articles received will be distributed in Christmas baskets to needy families in the county on Christmas Day.”
