“Chon Mitchell of Evergreen
High School is Conecuh County’s 1987 Junior Miss. She was crowned at the 1987
Junior Miss Pageant held Saturday night at the new Wiley Salter Auditorium at
Ed Reid State Technical College and will represent Conecuh County in the State
Junior Miss Contest. The local pageant is sponsored by the Pilot Club of
Evergreen.
“Lynn Watson of Bermuda and
of Monroe Academy was named first alternate, and Aimee Hagan of Evergreen High
School was named second alternate.”
“Andrew J. Hammonds, son of
William J. and Carol J. Hammonds of 25 Lee St., Evergreen, has been promoted in
the U.S. Army to the rank of sergeant.
“Hammonds is a team leader at
Fort Bragg, N.C., with the 82nd Airborne Division.”
“Mrs. Kitty Daw retired
recently after 13 years service with Knud Nielsen Co. She immigrated to this
country from Germany after World War II and started to work with the Nielsen
Co. in May 1973.”
“A site preparation grant
check for $100,000 is presented to the Industrial Development Board of the City
of Evergreen for Polyfelt, Inc. by Jamie ‘Red’ Etheridge, director of the
Alabama Development Office.”

“Don Wasson, political
reporter and columnist for The Montgomery Advertiser, will be guest speaker at
the noon meeting of the Evergreen Rotary Club at the Methodist Church. He will
be introduced by Bob Bozeman, who is in charge of the program.”
“The Evergreen Volunteer Fire
Department headquarters building may have a new look in a few months. The city
council at its meeting Tuesday night authorized architects to proceed with
plans and specifications to remodel the firehouse.
“Pearson, Tittle, Narrows
& Associates of Montgomery propose to remodel the building to blend in with
the new city hall.”
“Headmaster Mickey Goneke
announces that all Sparta Academy students who are interested in forming a band
and their parents will meet tonight at 7:30 at the Murphy Club. This is an
important meeting as plans for having a band for the coming football season
must be made.”
“Seven members of the Bermuda
Home Makers Club had a picnic on Wednesday and toured the Claiborne Lock and
Dam and the historic graveyard in Claiborne, Ala.”
“Lamuriel Peagler of the
Evergreen High School faculty is one of 36 high school mathematics teachers
from various parts of the United States attending an eight-week National
Science Foundation Summer at Georgetown University from June 28 through Aug.
20.”

“Leaves for Arctic: SEATTLE –
Army Sgt. William A. Bartlett, son of Mrs. W.W. Bartlett, Lenox, Ala., is scheduled
to depart from Seattle this month for the Arctic to take part in ‘Project
572-West.’ This project will carry supplies and equipment to distant early
warning (DEW) radar stations in the northern regions of Alaska and Canada.
Because of ice and weather conditions, the DEW bases can be re-supplied only
during the short Arctic summer.
“Sgt. Bartlett is a
longshoreman in the 572nd Transportation Co. The unit is expected to return to
its home station at Fort Eustis, Va. in October. The sergeant is a veteran of
11 years of Army service.”
“The Fairview Drive-In
Theatre will open on Friday, July 27, according to an announcement today by
Olin Evans, owner.”
The first movie shown at the
theater was “White Feather,” staring Robert Wagner and Debrah Padget.
“With the acquisition of the
final deed this week, the City of Evergreen now has the right of way for a new
street, G.L. Wilkinson, City Clerk, said today. The new street will connect
Magnolia and Pecan streets and will actually be an extension of Avenue C.
“A road connecting Pecan and
Magnolia has long been sought by residents of the area, as the only connecting
street is Stella, which is very narrow. The new street will be about 600 feet
long.”

regular meeting held at the Masonic Hall on Fri., June 13, the following

“31st Division to Move Through Evergreen Next Week: Evergreen
Unit In Fifth Echelon To Pass Through Here Friday, August 1st: One of the
largest troop movements ever to pass through Evergreen will be seen next week
when the 31st (Dixie) Division, composed of National Guard units and selectees
from the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, passes through
this section en route to the maneuvers at Dry Prong, La.
“The first echelon of the main body, made up of
approximately 600 trucks and 3,000 men, will pass through Evergreen Monday
morning, July 28, from 8:30 until 12 o’clock. Each succeeding day a similar
number of men and vehicles will pass through at approximately the same time,
until the last one clears Sat., Aug. 2.
“Each echelon will be made up of 10 units with 60 trucks
to the unit. The units will be spaced 10 minutes apart. The total length of
each echelon will be 66 miles, or, to better understand the length, when the
last truck in the last unit is passing through Evergreen, the first truck in
the first unit of the echelon will be entering Grove Hill.”

“MASONS NOTICE: The annual session of Conecuh County
Masonic Conference will convene with Lodge No. 756 at Bowles, on Wednesday and
Thursday, August the 11th and 12th. J.T. Salter, W.M., M.A. Lane, Sec.”
“PROMINENT PLANTER IS SNAKE BITTEN: Mr. Richard Brassel,
well known farmer living three miles north of here, has been suffering
considerably for the past week as result of a snake bite. Mr. Brassel was out
in his field several days past and stooped to pick up an ear of corn, when the
snake struck him on the hand. He was rushed to a physician immediately and
treatment was given. The snake which bit Mr. Brassel took refuge in a hole.
Close watch was made of the place and it was the following day when it came out
and was killed. It proved to be what is commonly known as a rattlesnake pilot.
Mr. Brassel is now improving.”
