“Keith Pugh, a three-year starter for Coach Mac Champion’s Monroe Academy Volunteers, was being sought by several major universities but really was only considering two local schools, Auburn and Alabama.
“But Mon., Nov. 25, Pugh announced that he would sign with Alabama on Sat., Dec. 14.
“The 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Pugh, Evergreen, played five years at Monroe Academy, although the first two years he played junior varsity ball.
“But in the final three, he played it all, from quarterback to linebacker, with a lot of running and receiving in the middle. His duties on the team included punting, kicking off, kicking extra points, kicking field goals and running at tailback and defensive halfback when he was needed."
