“Sparta sweeps past Ft. Dale:
The Sparta Academy Warriors varsity boys beat Fort Dale Academy, 63-61, Tuesday
night, Jan. 11, in the Sparta Gymnatorium. Russ Brown had 23 points; Chris
Blatz, 20; Al Etheridge, eight; Connery Salter, six; Joey Johnson, five; and
Britt McNeill, one.
“Sparta’s Jr. Varsity blasted
Ft. Dale, 51-35. Scott Salter had 21 points; Tim Brantley, eight; Thad Ellis,
five; Mark Rigsby, four; Jason West, four; Tim Wilson, three; Brandon Salter,
two; Chad Grace, two; and Marcus Blair, two.
“The Sparta girls defeated
Fort Dale, 40-32. Cheri Johnson scored 16 points; Tina Bybee, 11; Leah Carrier,
six; Jan Coker, four; Tammy Booker, two; and Raye Ann Gall, one; according to
Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.”
“Beth McCreary Turner
recently killed this seven-point buck on her farm near Brooklyn. The buck
weighed 160 pounds.”

“County cage meet to be held
here Jan. 25 & 26: The annual Conecuh County Basketball Tournament will be
held in Evergreen High School’s Gymnasium next Thursday and Friday, Jan. 25-26.
Champions will be determined in both ‘B’ and varsity divisions.
“Coach Wayne Pope’s defending
champions, the Conecuh County High Blue Devils of Castleberry, are heavily
favored to win both brackets.
“This is the schedule: ‘B’
Division, Thursday 1:30 p.m., Lyeffion vs. Evergreen; 3:30 p.m. Repton vs.
Castleberry; Friday 6:30 p.m. winners play for championship.
“Varsity Division: Thursday,
6:30 p.m., Lyeffion vs. Castleberry; 8 p.m., Repton vs. Evergreen; Friday, 8
p.m. winners play for championship.
“Admission to each session
will be 75 cents for adults and 35 cents for students. Trophies will be awarded
to the winners of ‘B’ and varsity.”

“Holtville Bulldogs Edge
Evergreen Five In High Scoring Tilt: Holtville’s fast-breaking Bulldogs edged
the Evergreen Aggies in the season’s most interesting game in Memorial Gym last
Friday night.
“Wayne (Dog) Douglas and
Billy Lewis played outstanding ball for the Evergreens. Douglas hit 12 points
and worked hard grabbing the rebounds. Lewis played a fine floor game and added
eight points in the scoring column. Shirley Frazier had 23 points; Ward
Alexander, six; Pace Bozeman, two; Randy White and Cullen Edson, two each.”
“Reeves Bucket Gives
Castleberry Win In Final Seconds 39-37: After leading most of the game, the
Evergreen Aggies wilted in the stretch and lost a thriller to Castleberry here
last Thursday night. Sub forward Lamon Reeves came in the game in the final
minutes and sank three set shots that tied the game then gave Castleberry its
winning margin with five seconds left.
“The win was the sixth in
eight starts for Coach Ray Owens’ Blue Devil quintet. The loss brought Coach
Wendell Hart’s Aggies’ mark to five wins and four losses this season.
“(Shirley) Frazier topped the
scorers with 17 points with Randy White of Evergreen and (James) Jernigan of
Castleberry getting 11 each. Bobby Daw had nine; Reeves and Lamon Booker, six
each; Wilbur Heaton, four; and Clay Wilson, three, for Castleberry. Wayne
Douglas with seven and Billy Lewis with two finished up the Evergreen scoring.”
“The fast moving Evergreen
(Conecuh County Training School) Five in its first three games trounced
Monroeville Rosenwald, 70-29, nosed out Georgiana, 54-40, and walloped Mobile
to the tune of 58-7, respectively.
“Leonard Goldsmith accounted
for 23 points in the first game and 15 in the third game to make him high point
player for those tilts. Floyd Watts was high pointer for second game with 21
points to his credit.
“Coach Mike Cheatham’s girls were edged out in their opening game
37-32 by a sharp shooting Monroeville aggregation, however, the Evergreen girls
have since turned back Georgiana High, 50-25, and Mobile County Training, 58-7.
“Clemetine Dukes, a junior
scored 25 points in the second game and 15 in the third to make her high point
player for those games. Etta Avant has exhibited skill in floormanship and has
been responsible for many of the markers that put Evergreen in the victory
column.”
“The Orange Bowl Story: The
Courant somehow failed in the rush of the holidays to mark the fact that
Evergreen was represented when Alabama’s mighty Crimson Tide lambasted the
pride of the East, Syracuse. Jeff Moorer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. (Randy)
Moorer, was a member of the Tide varsity this season and appeared in the Orange
Bowl game. Jeff played all of the last quarter on offense. We believe he is the
first Evergreen athlete to ever appear in a bowl game. Incidentally, Jeff is
slated for a lot of service next season. Right now, he is the No. 1 man at
offensive left guard.”

“Evergreen High School” by
Beth Deming – “Many basketball games were entered into this week. The game with
Brooklyn Wednesday night was unsuccessful for our team, the score being 17-14
in favor of the opponent. The referee was Mr. McInnis who is still Coach
McInnis to most of us. It was good having you back, Coach. Next in the athletic
activities were the competitive class games Friday afternoon. The Sr. I and Sr.
II girls played an exciting game, ending victoriously for the Sr. II, 10-3. The
Jr. I, Second team, composed of the smallest boys in our school, gave the Jr.
II’s much competition. However the upper classmen triumphed, 4-2. Friday night
our boys played Jay, Fla. The game was close and good sportsmanship was shown
by the players on both teams. The final score found Jay with 11, Evergreen 6.
Losing this game does not discourage our team though, for everyone knows, ‘you
can’t win them all.’”
“Castleberry” – “The
basketball teams played losing games here last Friday night when the boys
played Lyeffion, the score being 18 to 20 and the girls lost to Brooklyn with a
score of 15 to 20.”
