“Repton Bulldogs get trophy
Friday: The Birmingham News Class A Football Trophy given by the Birmingham
News will be presented to the Repton High School Bulldogs tomorrow. The
Bulldogs won the trophy with their best season last year. It was the first year
for their new coach, Gene Madison.
“The trophy will be presented
at an assembly program at 8 a.m. with Jerry Bryan, assistant sports editor of
The News, doing the honors. Principal Walter Hudson extends an invitation to
the public to attend the ceremony.”
“Thomas Hinson is a big man
on the football field and in the classroom, and he’ll be exercising those
talents at the University of Alabama this fall. Thomas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Hinson of Brundidge and formerly of Evergreen, has been awarded an academic
scholarship to the University, but plans to play football. Thomas stands six
feet, one inch and weighs 190. He played center for Pike County High School
where he earned a letter the past four years. He was named an alternate on The
Birmingham News Class AAA All-State Team. Thomas has been an outstanding
student in high school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, student
council, an Eagle Scout, member of the Order of the Arrow and the Brundidge
Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Hinson are former residents of Evergreen, where
he was associated with the Western Auto Store for several years. He owns the
Western Auto Store in Brundidge. Thomas’ grandmother, Mrs. J.H. Hinson, lives
here.”

“Aggies Bump Bears, 39-32,
For Third Straight Win: Coach Wendell Hart’s reorganized Evergreen High Aggies
bumped off a strong Robertsdale Bear five here Wednesday afternoon, 39-32, for
their third win in a row.
“Big Guerry (Get) Moorer led
the Aggies to the win with 15 points. John Greel Ralls, who fouled out early in
the fourth quarter after sitting out most of the second and third periods with
four personals, sacked 10 points for runner-up honors. Dickey Bozeman and Jack
Cunningham collected the rest of the Aggie points shooting seven apiece.”
“Aggies End Win Streak For Pleasant Home 53-22: The
Evergreen High Aggies played at full strength for the first time this year last
Friday night and were too much for a high flying Pleasant Home quintet that had
won nine straight games.
“John Greel Ralls, who
returned to action after a two-week layoff to catch up on his studies, led the
scoring parade with 19 points. Dickey Bozeman, almost fully recovered from a
leg injury suffered before Christmas, was in the runner-up spot with 14
markers. Big Guerry Moorer basketed 12 points.
“Jack Cunningham, Evergreen’s
ace guard, limited ‘Hot’ Helms to a single field goal. Helms is the leading
scorer for Pleasant Home and had averaged 25 points a game in his last three
starts prior to the Aggie clash. Cunningham played a fine floor game and
contributed two points to the Aggie total. Gwyn Daniels sank four points and
turned in a good defensive performance. Gillis Morgan sank two points to finish
up the Evergreen scoring."

“Aggies Defeat Brewton; Opp
Here Friday” by Cyrus Wells – “The local cagers squeezed out a 12-7 victory
over Brewton on their opponents’ court. The entire game was a fine exhibition
of pass work and guarding. The first quarter ended scoreless, but in the second
quarter Evergreen took the lead which they kept the rest of the game. The
Aggies pass work is slowly improving while their defense shows they want to
play basketball.
“Tonight the locals meet Red
Level basketeers on the local court. On Friday night they meet the strong Opp
Bobcats here. The Opp team has the strongest team to invade the local court.
“Evergreen (12) – Golson (2),
Heifner (3), E. Johns (2), Horne (4), D. Johns (1); Brewton (7) – Strain (2),
Finley (0), Dixon (2), Liles (3), Kelly (0). Sub: Brewton – Holman.”
