going to state: The Sparta Academy varsity boys and girls basketball teams will
be playing in the state tournament at Hooper Academy this Thurs., Feb. 21. The
Sparta girls will play Springwood Academy at 2 p.m. and the boys will play
Springwood Academy at 7 p.m.”
“Dameion Fantroy sets state
weight record: Hillcrest High School’s Dameion Fantroy blasted the state weight
lifting record in the 175-pound benchpress by 20 pounds. His first lift of 325
pounds won his weight class by 20 pounds, his second lift of 345 pounds bested
the state record of 340 pounds in 1988, and his third lift of 360 pounds bested
his own record by another 15 pounds. Dameion set his record in the state meet
in Eufaula, Feb. 16, 1991. He will be competing with several of his teammates
this Saturday in the Frisco City Invitational Powerlifting meet.”
“Sparta Warriors had 17-4
season: The Sparta Academy Warriors wound up a fine regular season of 17 wins
and four losses for the boys team, according to Sports Information Director
Byron Warren Jr.
“Sparta won its final game
with a victory over Wilcox Academy, 88-73, in Evergreen. Wayne Cook poured in
33 points and Tim Salter ripped 23. Mark Watts had 15 points, Steven Gall, 11,
and Scott Brown, 6, in a game played Friday night.
“The Warriors whipped Hooper
Academy, 93-66, played here on Feb. 8 with four players in double digits. Gall
had 22 points.”

“Warriors upset unbeaten Wilcox,
enter playoffs: The Sparta Academy Warriors pulled the upset of the year to end
regular season play on a high note when they edge previously unbeaten Wilcox
Academy, 46-45, in overtime in Camden Friday night.
“Sparta will meet Catherine
Academy tonight at six o’clock in the Alabama Private School District III
Playoffs at Wilcox. Winner and runner-up in the playoffs go to the state
tournament.
“Ronnie Pugh hit a 30-footer
in the final seconds of the overtime period to lead Sparta past the Wildcats
who had won all 19 of their games this season. Pugh also led the scoring with
18. Joe Andrews had 12; Jerry Peacock, nine; Bobby Johnson, four; Hugh
Bradford, two; and Walker Scott, one.
“The Warrior varsity finished the season with a fine 18-6 mark and
is seeded second in the district playoffs.”
“Lyeffion QB’s meet tonight: The Lyeffion High School
Quarterback Club will meet tonight at seven o’clock at the school. All members
and others interested in Yellow Jacket athletics are invited and urged to
attend.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Samuel
Bouchillion (Emma Sue Josey) and son, Keith, of Birmingham visited Mr. Joe
Josey Saturday. Friends here of Keith will be pleased to know that he was
chosen the outstanding defensive football player in which his team won the
state 4A championship last year at Mountain Brook High School.”

“Ex-Pro Footballer Speaks At
Rotary: Special speaker at the Rotary Club last Thursday was Lum Snider,
ex-professional football player.
“Snider, a native of
Cleveland, Tenn., was at one time an All-SEC and All-American guard on the
Georgia Tech squad.
“After several years of pro
ball with the Philadelphia Eagles, he coached for the British Columbia Lions in
Vancouver. He fascinated the Rotarians as he gave first hand information about
pro-football both in Canada and the U.S.
“Now a salesman for
International Paper Co. and resident of Birmingham, Snider was introduced to
the club by Knud Nielsen.”
“County Teams Vie In District
Meet: Three Conecuh County schools will participate in the Class A District I
Basketball Tournament to be held at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton Feb.
22-25.
“Castleberry, Repton and
Lyeffion will join 16 other teams from over the district in the Class A meet.
“Castleberry will be the
first Conecuh team to play when it meets Silas at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Winner of
the three o’clock game will play Excel at 7:30 that same evening.
“Lyeffion will play the
winner of a Wednesday afternoon match between Chatom and Fairhope at six
o’clock Wednesday.
“Repton and Monroeville will
play at 9 p.m. Wednesday and the winner will meet the winner of Miller vs.
Coffeeville Friday at 7 p.m.
“The tournament will be
played through Saturday with the consolation playoff at 7 p.m. Saturday and the
finals at 8:30.”
“Jr. League Calls Annual
Meeting Of Officers, Managers: The annual organizational meeting of the
Evergreen Junior Baseball League will be held Thursday night, Feb. 23, at the
courthouse at 7:30, according to President Wendell Hart.
“Hart said that all league
officers, managers of last year’s teams and game officials are asked to be
present at this meeting. Officers for 1961 will be elected and preliminary
organizational work for this summer’s play will be started.
“Among business to come up is
a proposal to reduce the number of teams from four to three in the National and
American Leagues. Hart said this move is being considered so as to cut play
from three to two nights a week and avoid conflict with the Babe Ruth League.”

“The Shooting Linds – Ernie
and Dot – are presenting a spectacular exhibition of fancy shooting in
Evergreen Feb. 28, which has been given the stamp of approval by the world’s
master fancy shooter, Ad Topperwein.
“Ernis and his attractive
wife, Dot, have been shooting professionally for the last 10 years and as a
team for the last five years. Their spectacular routine of fancy shooting with
pistol, revolver, rifle and shotgun has been arranged by the famous veteran gun
wizard, Ad Topperwein. Topperwein, himself the surviving member of the greatest
husband-wife shooting team of all-time, discovered the Linds last year and
brought them to his San Antonio, Texas ranch to impart, for the first time, the
technique of his fancy shooting which made him internationally famous.”
“Roads End Reached By State’s
Hunters: MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Hunting in Alabama reached the end of the road for
the 1946 season on Feb. 20, according to Game, Fish and Seafoods Chief Graham
Hixon of the Department of Conservation. On that day hunters get their last
crack at quail, rabbits, raccoons and opossums.
“Turkey hunters will have a
spring season of March 20 to April 15 on wild gobblers in those counties and
areas open to such hunting. The William B. Bankhead and Oakmulgee National
Forests will be open April 1-15 to turkey hunters who secure the proper
permits.”

“Plans Being Made For
Tournament: In the first district basketball tournament to be held here Feb.
27-28, the first game will be played Fri., Feb. 27, at one o’clock.
“The 10 best basketball teams
of this district will participate in this tournament. The official referee for
the games will be ‘Fob’ James of Enterprise.
“In this tournament, the
visiting teams will be our guests. As we are expected to take care of these
players, it will be greatly appreciated if the citizens of the town will, if
possible, take some of these boys. If you can and will do this for us, please
notify Coach McInnis or Morris Thornley.
“Season tickets are
obtainable. Patronize our ticket sellers and give your support to the Aggies in
making the tournament a success.”
