Harry Ellis reported .32 inches of rain on April 26. He also reported a high of
84 degrees on April 25 and April 29 and a low of 52 degrees on April 23 and April
27. Total rainfall for the month of April 2007 was 5.44 inches.
“Sparta Academy held their
annual Miss Alpha Pageant on Sat., April 14, 2007. Winners in the High School
Division were Alex Ross, first place; Tanner King, Miss Alpha; and Morgan
Harden, second place.”
“Reid State Technical College
will hold commencement exercises on Fri., May 11, 2007 at 6 p.m. in the Wiley
Salter Auditorium in Evergreen, Ala. Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme
Court, Sue Bell Cobb, will be the commencement speaker.”
“Evergreen Medical Center
sponsored their annual Health Fair Wednesday in the parking lot of the
hospital. People came by throughout the day to take advantage of the free
screenings and information provided during the event.”
“The 35th Judicial Circuit Drug
Task Force executed a search warrant last Tuesday, April 24, at a residence on
Magnolia Avenue and seized 29 grams of methamphetamine ice, one of the purest
forms of methamphetamine. To qualify as ice, the meth must be at least 98
percent pure.”

Harry Ellis reported no rain between April 27 and May 3. He reported a high of
85 on May 2 and a low of 38 on April 28. Total rainfall for the month of April
was 3.11 inches.
“Larry Morrison resigns as
city’s police chief: For the second time in less than six months, the City of
Evergreen Police Department is without a chief. Larry Morrison resigned as the
police department’s top officer last Thursday afternoon.
“Morrison, who was named to
the post amidst a cloud of controversy on Nov. 5, 1991, will assume the job as
police chief for the Town of Repton. It is the same position he held prior to
being named Evergreen’s police chief.
“Morrison filled the slot
with the Evergreen Police Department left vacant when former chief Leroy Hall
resigned last Aug. 23.
“Mayor (Lee) Smith issued a
memorandum naming Lt. Earnest Section as ‘acting chief.’ Mayor Smith said this
order will be in effect until the city council appoints a new chief.
“The city council will meet
May 12 at city hall.”
“Alma Martin Post 50 of the
American Legion installed new officers for the 1992-93 year at the Legion Home
on Highway 31 South Monday night. New officers are Gene Shipp,
Sergeant-at-Arms; Elmer Parker, Second Vice Commander; Charlie Holcombe, First
Vice Commander; Joe W. Merrill, Commander; and Howard Fore, Chaplain.”

Earl Windham reported no rain between April 25 and May 1. He reported a high of
86 on April 30 and a low of 40 on April 26.
“Mrs. Kathryn Tucker Windham
of Selma held her audience of youngsters and adults spellbound as she told
ghost stories during the Flea Market held at the L&N Depot on Saturday by
the Murder Creek Historical Society.”
“Purnell Salter, 80, of Burnt
Corn and Evergreen died Fri., April 22, in a Monroeville hospital. Mr. Salter
was a member of a prominent, pioneer Conecuh County family. His ancestors were
among the first settlers of this county and the family has contributed greatly
to the area in many ways.
“Mr. Salter had an abiding
interest in history and in families. He was often called upon by various
persons who wished to trace their ancestry. He on many occasions provided this
newspaper with historical data. He prized land grants from several presidents
to his ancestors. Some years ago, local people interested in the history of
Conecuh County interviewed Mr. Salter and received priceless information.”
“Dr. Clark Smeltzer has
resigned from the staff of the Conecuh County Hospital and states today that he
will end his practice of medicine here on June 3. Dr. Smeltzer began practice
here in November 1975 and was for many months the only physician in active
practice in this county.”

“Castleberry Church Starts
New Building: The Castleberry Methodist Church has already dismantled their old
frame church building and work was begun last week on a $35,000 red brick
sanctuary and educational building that will give the church more than 4,600
square feet in floor space. The new structure is being built in the same
location as the old building. Completion of the new building is scheduled Aug.
25.”
“Two lose lives in Saturday
crash: Two lives were snuffed out, several were injured and more than $8,000 in
property loss resulted from a three-vehicle accident early Saturday morning 1.1
miles south of Evergreen on a long straight stretch of U.S. 31 crossing Murder
Creek.
“Killed instantly in the
mangled wreckage were Eugene B. McIntyre, 52, and Earl Steen, 24, both from
Evergreen and employees of the Conecuh County Exchange. They were returning
from a delivery of farm supplies in Castleberry at the time of the accident.
“A pedestrian, Geneva Steen,
a 59-year-old woman, suffered a fractured spine from a reported jump off the
bridge to avoid the collision. George Thompson, pedestrian, age 63, also was
reported injured from the jump.
“Five women from Mobile
suffered bruises and injuries when the 1957 Cadillac in which they were
traveling smashed into the apparently unavoidable wreckage.
“Every person involved in the
gruesome accident was reported injured except Preston Smith, age 51, driver of
a big trailer truck that collided into the two-ton truck occupied by the two
fatally wounded men.”

“Lamar Kelly Appointed To
Head ABC Board: MONTGOMERY, Ala., April 29 – One of the men who helped write
legislation creating the State Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, former State
Sen. James Lamar Kelly, 50, Evergreen, today was named its chairman.
“The appointment, which is
effective immediately, was announced by O.H. Finney, the governor’s executive
secretary.
“Kelly, former mayor of
Evergreen, has been associated with the All States Life Insurance Co. since
1940. He now heads the firm’s mortgage and loan department and has office quarters
in Montgomery.
“The newly-appointed ABC
chairman succeeds Bryce C. Davis, Cullman, who resigned April 17 to return to
his lumber business.
“Kelly was a state senator
from the 17th Senatorial District (Butler, Conecuh and Covington Counties) from
1935 through 1939. Prior to that, he served as mayor of Evergreen for nine
years beginning in 1926.”
“Admiral Hobson’s Home To
Become State Shrine: GREENSBORO, Ala. – Magnolia Grove, the magnificent
ante-bellum home of Adm. Richmond Pearson Hobson, located in historic
Greensboro, will be dedicated a state shrine, May 1, as provided by the Alabama
legislature in 1943 when it voted a $7,000 restoration fund and $1,500 annual
maintenance.”
“A blood-test survey of 300
students of Conecuh County Training School revealed remarkable results. Only 10
children showed a positive test.”
