Earl Windham reported .08 of an inch of rain on May 13, .06 of an inch on May
14, .95 on May 16, 1.12 on May 17 and .13 on May 18. He reported a high of 89
degrees on May 13 and a low of 62 on May 12.
“The Town House (formerly
City Café) had a very special guest for supper Friday night. Jerry Clower,
internationally famous folk-comedian from Mississippi, was served with pleasure
by Johnny Allred, manager, and the staff of The Town House. Bill Crutchfield,
manager of Monroeville Radio Station WMFC, was in Clower’s party. Clower said
that the food at The Town House was ‘fittin’ to eat.’”
“Lisa Brock was crowned Miss
Rubicon at the Miss Rubicon Pageant at Evergreen High School on May 16.”
“Graduation exercises for
Sparta Academy will be held tonight in the Sparta Academy Gymnatorium at eight
o’clock. Mrs. Alice Stevens will present the commencement address.
“The Valedictory address will
be given by Selina Garvin, and the Salutatory address will be given by Lesa
Ralls.
“Diplomas will be presented
by Headmaster Jack Miller.”
“Melinda Little, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John J. Little of Castleberry, is the valedictorian of the 1980
graduating class of Conecuh County High School. Dwayne Godwin, son of Mr. and
Mrs. George M. Godwin Sr. of Rt. 2 Castleberry, is the salutatorian.”

“Evergreen High graduates 65:
One of the largest senior classes in the history of the school is to be
graduated at exercises Friday night in the Memorial Gymnasium. The program
begins at eight o’clock and will be highlighted by presentation of diplomas to
65 graduates.
“Kay Holman is valedictorian
and Nancy Nix is salutatorian of the Class of 1965.”
“Repton High School numbers
23 members in its 1965 graduating class. Graduation exercises will be held
Saturday night at eight o’clock in the school auditorium.
“Dorothy Waller is
valedictorian and Willene Powell is salutatorian of Repton’s Class of 1965.”
“There are 24 candidates for
graduation at the Lyeffion High School this year. Graduation exercises will be
held at eight o’clock Monday night in the school auditorium.
“Keith Holcombe is
valedictorian, and Bobbie J. Carter is salutatorian of the Class of 1965.”
“Conecuh County High School
of Castleberry will have one of its largest graduating classes in some years
when 29 seniors are awarded diplomas at exercises at eight o’clock Friday
night.
“Donald Sawyer is
valedictorian and Jimmy Oliver is salutatorian of the 1965 Class.”

“Evergreen High School will
award diplomas to 55 students at graduation exercises Friday night. The program
will be held in Memorial Gymnasium to afford room for the large number of
people expected to attend. The program will begin at eight o’clock.
“T.Y. Henderson Jr. is
valedictorian and will speak first followed by Salutatorian Betty Stallworth.”
“Lyeffion High School will
award diplomas to 17 graduates at exercises Friday night, May 26, in the school
auditorium at eight o’clock.
“Fancis Powell is
valedictorian of the 1950 class, and Billy Wayne Cook is the salutatorian.”
“Twenty eight members of the
class of 1950 will receive diplomas from Repton High School at graduation
exercises Friday night. The graduation program will be held in the school
auditorium at eight o’clock, according to Principal H.D. Weathers.
“Don Ivey was elected
valedictorian and Paul Watson salutatorian at Repton this year.”
“Seven persons lost their
lives in a tragic auto-truck collision here early Saturday morning. The
accident happened on the outskirts of Evergreen on the Loree Road at about 6:15
Saturday morning. The site was within the city limits and the accident
investigated by city authorities.”
Those killed included Jay
Sawyer, 30, of Frisco City; Leonard Bryant, 21, of Frisco City; Walter Johnson,
26, of Frisco City; James Johnson, 25, of Frisco City; and General Rodgers, 33,
of Monroeville; Mario Salter of Evergreen; and Mary Bozeman.

“S.S.A.S. Announces Plans For
43rd Commencement: The program for the 43rd annual commencement of the State
Secondary Agricultural School was announce the past week.
“Graduating exercises will be
held Friday night, May 31, with Dr. S.J. Hocking of the University of Alabama,
delivering the baccalaureate address and awarding diplomas by Prof. W.Y.
Fleming, principal.”
“At a meeting of the City
Council of Evergreen held at the office of Mayor C.A. Jones Monday night, Harry
L. Riley, traffic policeman, was elevated to the office of chief of police succeeding
J.C. Grant who resigned Monday to accept a place with the State Highway
Department.”
“Mrs. Bradley and Son Still
Held In Jail: Mrs. Ely Bradley and her 12-year-old son, Ely Bradley Jr., are
still being held in the county jail charged with the killing of Hobson Mason,
the shooting having occurred Friday night, May 10, at or near Mrs. Bradley’s
home on the Lawrence farm located on the old Castleberry road. Mason as result
of gunshot wounds received, died Sunday afternoon, May 12, about three o’clock.
“Mrs. Bradley and her son are
said to be holding firmly to their story of the affair as told in The Courant
last week, that is, that the first shot was fired at Mason by Mrs. Bradley in
an attempt to frighten him away from her door. The next and fatal shot they say
was fired by the 12-year-old boy through a window. According to their story,
Mason was attempting to come in the house over Mrs. Bradley’s protest by
forcing the door open.”

“Castleberry High School Ends
Session: Castleberry, May 23 – The commencement exercises of the Conecuh County
High School came to a close Wednesday with delivery of the baccalaureate
address and the awarding of diplomas. Dr. J.S. Thomas of the University of
Alabama delivered the address to the graduates. Four boys and six girls were
given diplomas. They are Rosa Pate, Helen Albreast, Albert Smith, Dewitt
Hancock, Edward Suddith and Forrest Castleberry.
“Prof. Sellers Stough has
been elected principal for another year.”
“B.M. Johnston attended the
Confederate reunion in Montgomery last week.”
“School Commencement: The
commencement exercises of the Agricultural school began on last Friday night
with the school play, a four-act drama, presented by pupils from several
departments.
On Sunday morning the
commencement sermon was delivered at the Baptist church by Rev. Norman McLeod
of Auburn.
“On Tuesday night, the senior
class exercises occurred and an interesting program presented.
“The auditorium was taxed to
capacity at most of these exercises to accommodate the crowds, reminding one of
the early days of the school under the late Prof. Liner.”
