“Aggies Lose Playoff, But Have Fine Season: The Evergreen High School Aggies lost to Jackson in the finals of the First District playoffs Friday afternoon in Jackson, 5 to 2. Although the team was disappointed in losing the district championship, the boys had an excellent season.
“The Aggie baseballers compiled a season record of nine wins and four loses on their way to second place in the district.
“Fine pitching by Ken Tucker and Billy Bateman sparked the team. The two hurlers limited foes to 18 earned runs and gave up only 48 hits.”

“Conecuh Amateurs Form  6-Team Loop: Play is underway in the Conecuh Amateur League with six teams entered, according to Bernard Powell, league president. First games were played Sunday afternoon with a total of 14 games on the season schedule which ends Aug. 16. A playoff among the four top teams will follow.

“Aggies Leave Today On 3-Day Road Trip: The Evergreen Aggies will leave Thursday morning of this week on a three-day road trip that will carry them to Beatrice and Camden.
“They will meet Beatrice Thursday afternoon and should have no trouble unless Beatrice has improved considerably as the Aggies trimmed them here early in the season, 16 to 3.
“The Aggies will spend the night in Beatrice and then move on to Camden where they will play one game Friday and one Saturday. This series is likely to prove tough for the Aggies as they only beat Camden, 7 to 6, in the first game played here two weeks ago and tied them 2 and 2 in the second.
“Hill Stallworth, Tom Stevens and Hub Sanders are expected to do mound duty for the Aggies on the trip. Sanders, whose regular position is third base, proved something of a sensation in his first start as a pitcher last Thursday when he struck out 11 men in five innings and walked only one.
“Rain Halts Brewton Game: With the Aggies leading 6 to 2, rain last Friday broke up their game with Miller High School of Brewton early in the fifth inning. One Brewton man was out in the fifth when the downpour came. If the Aggies could have retired two more, it would have been a legal game.
“’Mountain’ Stallworth was on the mound for the Aggies and allowed only two hits. All of Evergreen’s runs except one was scored through the squeeze play method. The exception was that run scored when Sanders, who was on second, scampered home on Stevens’ double.
“Getting Lighter Bats: Coach Robinson provided his boys with lighter bats Friday and the move immediately proved a wise one. The Aggies got eight hits in the four innings in which they came up and they were pretty evenly distributed among the nine. That’s heavier hitting in proportion to time played than at any other time this season.
“Seeks Game With Atmore: Robinson is trying to schedule a game with Atmore for Gantt Field next Thursday, May 23. Atmore is undefeated and is laying claim to the championship of the southwestern Alabama district.”

“Aggies and E. Brewton Play 14-Inning Tie: Darkness ended a 14-inning struggle between the Evergreen Aggies and East Brewton at Gantt Field last Thursday. The score was 4 to 4, neither team being able to score during the last seven innings.
“The Aggies had a four-run lead at the end of the fourth, but the visitors knotted the county with two markers in the fifth and one each in the succeeding innings.
“Sanders Whiffs Eleven: The pitching of Hub Sanders, who ascended the mound at the beginning of the 10th inning, struck out 11 of the 17 men who faced him, and allowed only one hit during the five innings, was a feature. In the 10th and 11th innings, he fanned five successive batters and in the 13th and 14th, five of the six who faced him. Normally a third baseman, he was converted into a pitcher by Coach Robinson when mound material became scarce. ‘Skin’ Hyde failed to show up for the game.
“McCall, East Brewton pitcher, went the route and worked effectively, allowing not more than one hit in any one inning. He did not walk a man.
“Holman Gets Double: Payne’s three base hits and Holman’s two-bagger were the only extra base hits of the game. Holman went out trying to stretch his hit into a three-bagger.
“Passes Three, Hits One: In the ninth, Stallworth walked three men and hit another but managed to keep East Brewton away from the plate. The first man up struck out, the second walked but went out trying to steal second, pitcher to second. Stallworth then walked Capers, hit R. Brewton and walked D. McCall to fill the bases but Weaver struck out to end the inning.”
