“Pritchard is head coach
Lyeffion High: Roger Pritchard, a graduate assistant football coach at Alabama
State University, Montgomery, has been named head football and basketball coach
at Lyeffion High School.
“Pritchard, a native of Fort
Myers, Fla., was a three-year regular at linebacker for the Hornets after
transferring to ASU from The Citadel. He is a 1972 graduate of North Fort Myers
High School where he was a star football player.
“The 24-year-old Pritchard
inherits a football team at Lyeffion High School that went 2-8 last year, but
he hopes to improve the small Class A team by stressing fundamentals when
practice begins Aug. 6.
“Pritchard’s top assistant
will be former Alabama State defensive tackle Edward Johnson of Chicago, Ill.”
“There will be a varsity
football team organizational meeting at Lyeffion High School next Thursday
night, July 26, at seven o’clock. All boys who want to play varsity football
for the Yellow Jackets are asked to attend this important meeting.”
“Conecuh County High School
Quarterback Club will meet this Thursday night, July 19, at 7:30 in the school
lunchroom. All interested people in the sports program are urged to attend to
meet the new coach, Doug Williamson.”
“Ezra Dees of Bermuda really
made a haul when he went fishing last week. He caught these two stringers of
catfish that weighed 39 pounds.”

“Ronnie Jackson, ace
Evergreen Aggie cager, has been honored by selection as a member of the South
A-AA All Star Basketball Team to play in the annual game at the University of
Alabama on Aug. 13.
“This year there will be two
all-star games in keeping with the new four-division set up for state teams.
One game will pit Class A and Class AA stars, including Jackson, from the South
against a similar group from the North. The other features Class AAA and Class
AAA players. Both games are sponsored by the Alabama High School Athletic
Association.
“Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Orman Jackson of Evergreen, plays guard and forward. He is 17 years old, stands
six feet-three inches and weighs 165. In three years varsity basketball under
Coach John L. Robinson he has specialized in the jump shot and averaged 17
points per game and 12 rebounds.
“Ronnie’s athletic honors
include all-county for two years, all-area in 1964 and all-Christmas Tourney.
He served as team captain for the past two years. Alabama Christian of
Montgomery is his choice for college.”
“Alabama’s Junior Miss,
Margaret Hagood, poses with ‘The Rev. Mr. Black,’ their purpose being to focus
your attention on the Evergreen Jaycees’ 2nd annual Evergreen Horse Show which
begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Brooks Stadium. Featured on the program will be
an address at 7:30 by George Wallace Jr., son of Alabama’s governor.”

“Evergreen Legion Team
Defeated In Playoffs: The Evergreen Junior American Legion Baseball Team was
eliminated from the district playoffs by Andalusia in a game Monday afternoon
in Andalusia. In two previous meetings the Evergreen team had defeated
Andalusia both times, and were the only team in the district to hold double
wins over Andalusia.
“Evergreen finished third in
the regular season standings in the district with a six won and four lost
record. Andalusia finished first and Brewton second. Evergreen did this with
only about three boys with any previous experience, and Jack Finklea, manager
of the Legion team, says that the groundwork has been laid for a fine team next
year.
“Bobby (Pistol Pete) Wells
deserves a lot of credit for the fine showing of the Evergreen squad. Pete was
the winning pitcher in all six of Evergreen’s victories. He received for two
losses.”
“Troop 64, composed of two
patrols, the Rattlesnake and the Flame Arrow, enjoyed a two-day camping out on
our farm near Sandy Ridge, two miles east of Evergreen, Ala., July 3-4, 1949.
“We went fishing, played
baseball, sang and told stories, as well as we enjoyed cooking our meals during
our stay out there.
“Below are the names of the
scouts who took an active part in the outing: James Stern, Walter Crook, Joseph
L. McGhee, James Watson, Joseph Rodgers, Joseph Simpton, Edward Stallworth,
Preston Stallworth, Jesse Albert Rankins and myself, John B. Jordan Jr., Senior
Patrol Leader.”

“Locals Win From Greenville 6
To 4: The Evergreen ball club defeated Greenville on the latter’s home diamond
Sunday afternoon by a score of six to four in a game featured by the hurling of
Woody Mott, rotund hurler recently acquired by the locals, and weird umpiring
which threatened for a time to precipitate fisticuffs.
“Mott held the Greenville
team hitless until two men were out in the ninth inning, following which two
weird decisions on the bases, coupled with two hits and some slow fielding,
allowed the Greenville outfit to score three runs. One run had been previously
scored without a hit by the home team.
“The locals were paced at bat
by Barney Ferguson, husky third baseman, who hit safely three times in as many
tries, followed by Sam Jones with three hits in five tries. Al Hansen chimed in
with two hits, and one hit was registered by each of the other local clubbers
except Archie Barfield, who seemed unable to make them go safe.
“Melton drove in three runs
when he clouted a long drive to center field which Wilson, Greenville center
gardener, got his hands on but was unable to hold. The play was called an error
by Wilson, with Melton stopping on third base. Melton also clouted out a
two-base hit for his only base knock.
“Fisticuffs were barely
avoided in the ninth inning when Hester, hometown umpire, made two bad
decisions in succession. Manager Melton took exception on the second occasion,
and trouble was averted only when teammates restrained the fiery Tom from
taking a poke at Hester. Hester immediately ejected Melton from the game, and a
moment later sent Sam Jones to the showers. No reason has been assigned for the
chasing of Jones.
“Following the flare up
Sunday, announcement was made that Hester had resigned as an umpire and will
join the Chapman club as a player. Announcement was also made Tuesday that J.O.
Stapp, local arbiter, had resigned, to be succeeded by ‘Sullivan’ Murphy,
efficient and well liked umpire. The announcement of successful negotiations
for the services of the red-headed Murphy was received with approval from
players and fans alike. Players of other clubs hailed the securing of Murphy as
a stroke of good fortune for the league as a whole.
“Another move designed to
strengthen the local club for the rest of the second half pennant chase is the
announcement of the acquisition of Herbert English, right-handed pitcher from
Range. English pitched six innings against the local club in the game between
the American Legion team and the Evergreen team on the Fourth of July, and
Manager Melton was favorably impressed with his showing. English will be
eligible to participate in all games starting Sun., July 22.
“Evergreen journeys to
Luverne for the usual Thursday afternoon game, returning home for an imbroglio
with Chapman Sunday.”
