The Evergreen Courant's Sports Flashback for Aug. 7, 2015

ONE YEAR AGO
AUG. 7, 2014

“Sparta Academy head football coach Justin Chandler announced on Monday that Sparta’s varsity football team will face Hooper Academy in a preseason game on Aug. 22.
“That game, which won’t count against either team’s regular season record, will kick off at 6:30 p.m. at Davis Henry Field in Hope Hull.”

“Hillcrest High School’s varsity football team officially kicked off fall football practice on Monday as the Jags began preparations for their preseason game against Clarke County High School on Aug. 22.
“Monday’s first practice was scheduled for 5 p.m. and Hillcrest head coach Larry Boykin was expecting a good practice, especially from his solid group of returning players.”

“Evergreen football standout Justin Nared will take the field for his senior season as the starting quarterback at Tuskegee University when the Golden Tigers open their season on Sept. 6.
“Nared, a record-setting quarterback at Hillcrest High School in Evergreen, will lead the Golden Tigers in their season opener against Alabama A&M University on Sept. 6 in Tuskegee. Nared, who led Tuskegee to the SIAC football title in 2012, missed three games last season due to an injured shoulder, but he’s back to full strength now and ready to play. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Nared, who played as a true freshman, is 11-2 as a starter over the past two years.”

“Hillcrest gets a new coach with optimistic aspirations: The Hillcrest High Jaguars will be getting a new coach and a brand new season to demonstrate their talents on the field.
“Coach Arlton Hudson will be leading the Jaguars into the 1999 season with an almost completely new coaching staff behind him. David Godwin will be the secondary coach, Joseph Dean will be the defensive coordinator, Danny Covin will be in charge of the offensive line and Dewan Salter will take control of the offensive backs. Louis Berry will be coaching the junior high team.
“The Jaguars will have 60 players this season. Frederick and Sedrick Rudolph are two key offensive and defensive backs. Sam Fountain is a key offensive and defensive lineman while Jason Watkins will be a key fullback and linebacker.”

“Coach Akins has great expectations for his 1999 Warriors: Coach Jack Akins of Sparta Academy is hoping to have 25 players for this football season. Although the Warriors only have three seniors on the team and lost one of their key players to Hillcrest, Coach Akins believes this team has heart.
“Key players for the Warriors include Kyle Johnston, running back; David Bush, fullback; Jeremy McClain, tackle; Derek Faulkner, tackle; John Anderson, center; and Michael Henry, a new player from McKenzie, linebacker.
“It is a toss-up between Jared Brogden and Derek Williams as to who will have the responsibility of being quarterback.
“Coach Akins said last year was a rebuilding year and this year the team feels as if it is more unified and team-oriented.”

“Photographer and Mayor-elect Pat Poole provided the cutline for this picture: ‘Stanley Johnson on the reel and Harry Crabtree on the dip net teamed up to land this 21-pound blue catfish last Saturday at Camden. It’s not a record, but when you catch ‘em on a bream hook, it is noteworthy.’”

“Ladies softball meet in Atmore Aug. 18: There will be an open ladies softball tournament Aug. 18 in Atmore. Individual and team trophies will be given to the first place team. Team trophies will be awarded for the second and third place teams. Anyone interested in participating should contact Linda and Larry Presley.”

“4-H’er Mark Chavers, 11-year-old son of Frank and Joann Chavers of Evergreen, Rt. 1, draws a bead. Mark had shot his air rifle at a few sparrows prior to shooting skeet at the annual Evergreen Rotary Wildlife Camp. When he put the shotgun to his shoulder for the first time to shoot skeet, the hits were nine in a row. Bill Ivey, skeet-shooting instructor extraordinary, was as surprised as anyone at Mark’s dead eye. Mark was also selected as the best in the junior division in spin casting and fly casting competition. ‘As a 4-H’er, Mark has an outstanding record,’ according to Herbert Oakley, Extension Farm Agent. He was completed projects in swine, corn, home ground beautification and has shown a 1,000-pound choice steer in the calf show. ‘If Mark keeps on he will be a state champion some day,’ says Oakley.”

“QUARTERBACKS MEET TONIGHT AT 7:30: The Evergreen Quarterback Club will meet tonight at 7:30 at the City Hall. All members and others interested in Aggie football are urged to attend.”

“Jaycees, Spotlite Tie For First Place: In a rough, extra-inning battle the Spotliters squeaked by the Jaycees to grab a tie for first place. The Jaycees, favored to win by several runs, couldn’t show their customary power in the first half of the extra inning and lost by one run, 14-13.
“In other league play this week, two winless teams broke into the win column for the first time. Thursday night, the American Legion took the Evergreen Garment entry by a score of 24 to 6, then lost a close one to the Kiwanis Tuesday, 15-13. The other heretofore winless team, the Garment Co., beat the Evergreen Equipment Co. Tuesday in the lowest scoring game of the year, 6-5.
“In the last week of league play, both the Spotlite playing the American Legion tonight at 7 p.m. and the Jaycees playing the Garment Co. Tuesday night must win to maintain the tie. Should both teams win, a playoff will be necessary. Should both teams lose, and the Kiwanis take the Equipment entry tonight at 8:30 p.m., the time between the Kiwanis and the Garment Co. would have to be played off. Then, proving the Kiwanis wins from the Garment entry, there would be a three-way tie for first place.
“The managers of both the Legion and Garment clubs claim they will be no ‘weak sisters’ when they play the leaders this week. They have served notice on the Jaycees and Spotlite that a rough game is in store for each of them.
“In the other game tonight, Kiwanis plays Equipment at 8:30 p.m.m
“Attendance has picked up considerably, and the interest in this last week of play should bring out some fine crowds.”

“Rev. Miller Whips Ivey To Win Tournament: This week the Evergreen Country Club announced that Rev. Robert Miller, pastor of the Evergreen Presbyterian Church, won the Annual Handicap Golf Tournament. In the last match, Bill Ivey led him up to the seventh hole by one stroke. Rev. Miller, won the eighth hole and went on to take the ninth, winning the match and tournament.
“On his way to the title, Rev. Miller won matches from H.J. Kinzer, W.J. Millsap, Roy Thomas, Bill Gibbons and Bill Ivey. The runner-up Bill Ivey took matches from Herman Bolden, Brown Boykin, Bill Gaines and Bill McGehee.
“The older generation of golfers was given formal notice by Bill Ivey’s play that they are in for some serious competition in the future. Bill, only 14, carded an average score of less than 44, which is certainly exceptional for a golfer his age.
“The consolation winner will be decided in playoffs this weekend, with Hub Robison and Temple Millsap scheduled to play today. The winner of this match will play Doc Wilkinson, then the winner playing Herman Bolden for the consolation prize.
“A great deal of interest was shown in this tournament, with 28 entries making up the field. The players had good weather, and the course was in good shape in spite of the dry weather preceding the tournament.”

“A meeting of the Board of Directors and committee chairmen of the Evergreen Chamber of Commerce has been called for this (Thursday) afternoon at the City Hall it was announced today by C.C. Miller, president.
“Plans for auctioning off the first bale of cotton of the 1954 season will be discussed and completed, Mr. Miller said.
“The officials will also discuss plans for assisting the Evergreen Quarterback Club with the project of putting a fence around Brooks Stadium. Plans are underway for erecting a permanent type steel fence around the stadium before the football season begins in September.”

“Three indoor sports tournaments will wind up the Summer Recreation Program, it is announced today by Coach Bill Parsons. The three tournaments will be Ping Pong, Shuffleboard and Pool, and will be held next week beginning Monday at the Recreation Center.
“Although the tennis court has been finished, no tournament is planned for this sport. The lighting is out of order, and it is hoped it can be repaired shortly. Persons playing tennis are reminded to bring their own racquets and balls.
“Entries on the three tournaments will be taken at the Recreation Center by Coach Parsons on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The deadline is Saturday at 5 p.m. All games must be played next week.

“The public is cordially invited to take part in these tournaments.”
