“James ‘Grease’ Gross competed in the Tough Man Contest held recently in Monroeville. After defeating his first two opponents with first round knockouts, he then went to the championship fight, which turned out to be the highlight of the night for the Lightweight Division (110 pounds to 160 pounds). The fight was scheduled for three rounds, but it turned into an eight-round battle to the end. The decision was a draw and both men split the prize winnings and received a trophy.”

“Wendell Hart Scholarship Fund Committee Chairperson Carol Gordy and Evergreen Rotary Club President John Nielsen are pictured with Shakela Brye, the 1996 recipient of the Wendell Hart Scholarship. Shakela spoke to the Rotary Club at their regular meeting last Thursday at Bubba’s.”

“Horse show Saturday: Steve Coker and his Palomino filly ‘Sparkle’ join in inviting everyone to come out to the Lyeffion Saddle Club Arena Saturday for a barbecue and horse show starting at 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Lyeffion High School FFA and the Saddle Club and all proceeds go to the FFA Chapter. There will be entertainment for all from a special children’s event to the wild cow milking… so, the sponsors say: ‘Ya’ll come out for some fun and good food… see you there! The arena is on Highway 83 North.”

“The (Evergreen City) Council approved a business license for Lavane Farley Sporting Goods Store in Village Plaza, Highway 31 South.”

“These Dodgers knocked the Yankees out of a first place tie in the National League by upsetting them in the final game of the Evergreen Junior League season. They are Jerry Daw, Lester Daw, Mike Turner, David Jackson, Donald Jackson, Sammy Garrett, Johnny Andrews, Assistant Manager Gene Shipp, Tommy Shipp, Shavon Halford, Donnie Griggers, Gary Gibson, Larry Tranum, Tony Weaver and Manager Matthew Davis.”

“Aggies to play Atmore Sept. 8 in opening game: The opening game of the 1966 football season for the Evergreen High Aggies has been moved up from Friday night to Thursday night, Sept. 8, according to Principal Morris Ward of Evergreen High School.
“The Aggies will meet the Atmore Blue Devils here in Brooks Stadium in the season-opener for both teams. Principal Ward said that by moving the game up to Thursday night conflict with other games in the area would be avoided and attendance boosted.
“Football practice got underway at both schools on Monday.”

“Golf tourney begins Sunday: The annual membership tournament of the Evergreen Golf Club will get underway with a qualifying round to be played Sunday afternoon at the local links. All golfers who wish to participate in the meet are to play an 18-hole qualifying round Sunday.
“The low seven scorers in that round plus Bill Ivey, defending champion, will make up the championship flight. The other golfers will be divided into four player flights based on the qualifying scores.
“Wednesday, the championship group will play the nine-hole matches with the winners forming the championship flight and the losers the first flight, and they will play another nine-hole match. All other flights will play 18-hole matches on this date.
“Sun., Aug. 28, the finals and consolation finals of all flights will be played, all 18-hole matches. Should golfers be unable to play Wednesday afternoon, they may play on another date prior to the 28th.”

AUG. 16, 1951

“Coach Hart Will Hold First Practice Session Monday, August 20: Coach Wendell Hart has issued a call for the first football practice for the coming season to be held beginning at 2 p.m. next Monday, Aug. 20. All players are requested to meet at the Memorial Gym at that time.
“The first few days will be devoted to getting organized, issuing equipment and conditioning exercises. Rough work will probably not start until the following week. The first game of the season will be played here on Friday night, Sept. 14, with Millry.”

“Paul Aces Win Game And Pennant Sunday: The Paul Aces cinched the 1951 Conecuh Amateurs League championship with a 6-1 win over the Shreve Eagles Sunday afternoon. The game was played at Paul.
“Paul has now stretched its lead to 5-1/2 games over Centerville and Bermuda, who are tied for second place.
“J.W. Windham, the league’s ace pitcher, twirled a neat two-hitter for Paul. He had a shut out going until the ninth inning when the Eagles produced their lone run. The win was Paul’s fifth straight. Joe McClain caught for Paul.
“Herbert Sanford pitched and Leroy Smith caught for the Shreve Eagles.
“Oneal Barfield with two for three and Ronnie Edson with two for four hits at the plate spearheaded Paul’s attack.
“James Barlow and Woodrow Windham each had one hit in four trips for the Shreve Eagles.”

“The All-Stars from teams of the Conecuh Amateur League will meet Bolling, top team of the Butler County Semi-Pro League, in an exhibition game Sun., Aug. 26. The game will be played at McKenzie. Game time 3 p.m.”

“Junior Baseballers Shutout Brewton, 4-0: The Evergreen American Legion Pee Wees shutout Brewton’s juniors, 4-0, last Friday morning.
“Jerry Kendrick allowed Brewton only one hit and struck out nine batters. He walked three.
“The Evergreen lads got only two hits off Brewton pitching, but made them count for all four runs in the very first inning. James Nelson, second baseman, and Robert King, shortstop, got the two Evergreen hits.
“The balance of Coach Wendell Hart’s starters were Mike Kendrick, centerfield; Wayne Frazier, third base; Robert Mason, catcher; Bill Ivey, first base; Leon McKenzie, right field; and Douglas Thames, left field. Others playing in the game were Paul Pace, Murray Johnson, Bill Ansley, John Finklea and Billy Grace.”

AUG. 20, 1936

“(Boy Scout) Troop 80 played a 10-inning game against the Monroeville juniors Tuesday. Monroeville won the game, after playing three additional innings to get the tie off. The score was 7-6.
“Batteries for Monroeville were: Pullens, pitching, and Latham, catching. Players for Evergreen were: Dick Murphy, first base; Vaughn Fountain, second base; Charlie Northcutt, shortstop; Carl Wiggins, third base; Horace Jay, left field; Knud Nielsen, center field; James Tate, right field.
“Jim Lane pitched until the first of the fifth, then Carl Wiggins went in and Jim went to third. Bill Wiggins, catching. We will return the game Friday.”

“Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Deming and daughter, Frances, left Saturday for Innerarity, where Mr. Deming and Senator J.L. Kelly, who accompanied them, took part in the Fishing Rodeo.”

“No Early Open Season On Doves This Year: Montgomery, Ala., Aug. 20 – Commissioner I.T. Quinn of the Department of Conservation has received a telegram from Ira N. Gabrielson, Chief of the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey, informing him of the open season for migratory birds in regulations which have just been promulgated by the President of the United States. The open season on waterfowl, snipe and coot in the zone including Alabama will be from Nov. 26 to Dec. 25 following.”
