“The Conecuh County
Commission met Monday morning for the regular meeting and discussed the damage
to the county caused by Hurricane Ivan.
“County Engineer Winston
Foshee asked the commission to give him permission to accept emergency bids for
the removal of debris from the county roads so he does not have to advertise
the bidding and speed up the cleanup. The commission voted unanimously to
approve his request.”
“Larry Fluker, the
mayor-elect for the City of Evergreen, announced this week that he, along with
all of the newly-elected council members, will be sworn in officially on Mon.,
Oct. 4, 2004 at an inaugural ceremony at Reid State Technical College at 5 p.m.
“Judge Sue Bell Cobb will
administer the oaths of office to Fluker and the council members. Judge Cobb is
a member of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals and she’s a native of Conecuh
County.”
“All business leaders and
citizens of Conecuh County are cordially invited to attend a ‘Business After
Hours’ reception in honor and appreciation to Mayor Lomax Cassady on Thurs.,
Sept. 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the historic L&N depot.

“Ronald Faulkner of 220
Bruner Avenue, Evergreen killed this monster water moccasin last Thursday on
Highway 31 South. The snake, which was five feet long and weighed an estimated
20 to 25 pounds, was crawling across the highway when Faulkner killed it.”
“Evergreen Personnel Director
Freddie Stallworth congratulates Darrell Davis who was promoted to Wastewater
Superintendent by unanimous vote of the City Council at its meeting last week.
Davis has been employed by the city for a number of years and holds a required
Class I Certification in wastewater treatment and also a Class II Certification
in water treatment. Looking on are City Administrator Curtis Hamilton and Mayor
Lee F. Smith.”
“A man drowned in a family
fish pond at Burnt Corn early last Wednesday night. The victim was Frank
Rankins, 56-year-old male, of Burnt Corn, according to Sheriff Edwin L.
Booker’s office.
“Officers said that Rankins
was fishing alone in a boat in a pond behind his brother’s house. They believe
he fell out of the boat while trying to retrieve a snagged hook and line.
“Officers of the Conecuh and
Monroe Sheriff’s Departments as well as the Conecuh County and Monroe County
Rescue Squads were called to the scene. Members of the Conecuh Rescue Squad
found the body in approximately 10 feet of water a short time later.”

“Repton Lodge No. 575,
F.&.A.M., will have a communication Tuesday night, Oct. 1, at 7:30 at the
lodge. There will be work in Fellowcraft. All Master Masons are invited to
attend.”
“This is a snake story, but
it is a true one. Policeman Robert Taylor killed this 4-1/2 foot long
rattlesnake in former Mayor Coy Harper’s yard one afternoon last week. It had
14 rattlers. The same afternoon Orbie Mosley killed this rattlesnake, five feet
long, 10 rattlers and a button in… you guessed it, the Harper yard. If the
former mayor and furniture tycoon has gone into the rattlesnake raising
business, this newspaper will give you odds Mrs. Harper (Florence) will soon
put a stop to that.”
“The trial of criminal cases
on the docket of the Fall Term of Circuit Court begins here Monday with Circuit
Judge Robert E.L. Key presiding. District Attorney Ted Pearson of Monroeville
and County Solicitor Henry J. Kinzer of Evergreen will prosecute for the state.
“There are 23 cases set on
the docket, according to Circuit Clerk Leon A. Salter. In addition, six civil
cases, continued from the recent session, are also set for trial next week.”
“Presbyterians welcome new
pastor Sunday: The Evergreen Presbyterian Church, without a minister for so
long, welcomes the Rev. Roderick McDonald. He has accepted the call of the
church and will open his ministry at the 11 o’clock worship service Sunday
morning.”

“Know Your Public Officials –
Fifth of a Series: Six officers serve the city: This report in the series
concerns the City of Evergreen Police Department. John Andrews, a graduate of
the Alabama Police Academy, is the chief of the department. The men under his
command are James Ellis, Leroy McDonald, Travis Baggett and Matthew Davis Jr.,
patrolmen, and L.E. (Gene) Salter, radio dispatcher.
“Miller T. Sellers, City
Clerk; Mrs. Pearl Suddith, Assistant to the City Clerk, and Jane Brown, office
assistant, help the police department insofar as their paperwork is concerned.”
“Pugh’s Café Sold… Now The
Sweet Shop: Pugh’s Café, located on Rural Street, Evergreen, formerly owned by
D.M. Pugh, has been sold to Truman Hyde, a resident of Evergreen. He has
changed the name of the café to ‘The Sweet Shop,’ and is open for business.”
“Olivia Kindig receives the
banner indicating that she is Conecuh
County’s 1959 Maid of Cotton. Doing the
honors is Hugh Brown, past president, and long time leader of the Conecuh Farm
Bureau. Olivia was presented the banner at a meeting of the Farm Bureau Board
of Directors at the Evergreen Recreation Center.”

“Posthumous Award Made Curtis
Ashley Carter: Relatives of Curtis Ashley Carter last week received from the
U.S. Maritime Service the Mariner’s Medal which was recently posthumously
awarded to the late Mr. Carter.
“Mr. Carter was reported
missing April 8, 1942. He was in the Maritime Service and, at the time he was
reported missing, was on duty on an oil tanker. All other members of the crew
have been accounted for as prisoners of war of the Japanese government.”
“Staff Sgt. Bryant Covan
Reported Prisoner of War: A telegram from the Adjutant General’s office dated
Sept. 15 to Mrs. Bryant Covan informed her that her husband, Staff Sgt. Bryant
Covan, who had previously been reported as missing in action, was now a
prisoner of war of the German Government at Stalag Luft 4, Germany.
“S-Sgt. Covan was reported
missing over Austria June 26. He was an aerial gunner on a B-24.”
“Pfc. Elly H. Cowart Jr.
Returns To Active Duty: Mr. and Mrs. E.H. Cowart were recently informed by a
telegram from the War Department that their son Pfc. Elly H. Cowart Jr., who
was reported wounded sometime ago, had recovered and has returned to active
duty. Mr. and Mrs. Cowart also received this week the Purple Heart which was
awarded their son. They have had letters from him regularly since he was
wounded but none of these gave any details concerning the nature of his
injuries. He was wounded July 25 and returned to active duty Aug. 22. He is
with the combat engineers in France.”
