“Aggies Will Open 1953 Grid Season In Atmore Tomorrow Night At 8: Coach Wendell Hart and Assistant Coach Bill Parsons will unveil the 1953 edition of the Evergreen High School Aggies tomorrow (Friday) night in Atmore. The season opener with the Blue Devils gets underway at Atmore’s Municipal Stadium at eight o’clock.
“Capt. Sam Cope, 210-pound right tackle, will lead a rugged, experienced line into the fray. Teamed with him at tackle is veteran Wayne (Dog) Douglas, 185-pound starter returning from last season. Richard Taylor, 165-pound guard, Ronnie Edson and Bud Ward, 160-pound ends, are returning starters in the forewall. Letterman Wayne Bell is expected to get the nod at center and letterman Paul Hanks or Vernon Purnell will probably start at the other guard.
“The backfield will be paced by two veterans, Alt. Capt. Ward Alexander Jr., 180-pound fullback, and Jimmy Frazier, 160-pound quarterback. Alexander has two years experience as a starter. Frazier was a starting guard last year with some experience in the backfield. Buck Lewis will probably get the nod at right half. Walter Carrier, Johnny Fussell and Eugene (Pee Wee) Hyde are waging a spirited battle for the other starting post.

“Atmore and Evergreen resumed their football rivalry last year after a lapse of some seven or eight years. The Aggies played one of their best games of the season and rolled to a 19-6 win. Atmore’s only other loss was to McGill of Mobile. The Blue Devils suffered few losses by graduation and are highly touted. Their offense is built around James Kennedy, a hard running halfback who gave the locals plenty of trouble last year.”
