A fox killed on the Old Stage Road has tested positive for
rabies and area veterinarians say people should take precautions to protect
themselves and their pets.
Dr. Larry Compton, owner of Airport Animal Clinic on U.S.
Highway 21 in Monroeville, said the fox attacked dogs at a house on the Old
Stage Road near Excel, Monday and Tuesday nights.
Compton said the dogs’ owner knew this was unusual behavior,
so when the fox returned on Tuesday, he shot it.
The fox’s head was sent to the Public Health Laboratory in
Mobile where its brain tissue tested positive for the rabies virus.
Frisco City High School, coming off a 44-14 over John Essex
High School Friday in Demopolis, is preparing to begin its quest for the 1A,
Area 3 championship.
(Johnny) Sirmon led the charge (against John Essex) with 154
yards and two touchdowns on 10 rushes. Cedric Brown followed with 132 yards and
four touchdowns on 20 carries. Freshman Marcus Lee had 126 yards on 15 totes.
(Other standout Frisco players in that game included Randy
Coleman, and Rodney Dollar was Frisco’s head coach.)
Mandy Yelverton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frankie Yelverton
of Monroeville, was crowned the 27th homecoming queen of Monroe Academy Friday
night. Headmaster Dick Cleveland crowned Miss Yelverton, escorted by her
father, at pre-game festivities.

Two persons died and seven others were injured in six of the
seven traffic accidents reported in Monroe County during the past week,
according to Alabama State Troopers and the Monroeville Police Department.
The J.U. Blacksher Bulldogs were spoilers Friday night in
Castleberry when they defeated the Blue Devils, 20-14, on the Devils’
homecoming.
The Bulldogs at 2-4 scored twice in the second half with the
second score coming with 1:37 left in the game to give Castleberry its second
area loss in a row.
(Standout players for Blacksher in that game included Randy
Blackwell, Dale Bradley, Terry Cumbie, Danny Dixon, Shannon Driskell, Allen
Gunn, Craig Hales, Chris Harrison, David Kirchharr, David Peavy and Jimmy
Woods. Keith Cardwell was Blacksher’s head coach.)
A Monroe County jury Tuesday awarded $18,000 in damages to a
Peterman woman who claimed she was allowed to fall and break her hip while she
was in Monroe County Hospital’s intensive coronary care unit in 1979.
Neither side disputed the facts which led to Cornelia
Dennis’ injury. The disputed issue was who was at fault.
The Monroe County fall grand jury indicted 48 people Tuesday
– 47 for felonies and one for a misdemeanor.
The grand jury, composed of 18 jurors chosen at random from
90 called to serve, was empanelled Monday by Circuit Judge Robert E.L. Key and
reported Wednesday morning.

MUSEUM GIVEN BOOST – The Monroe County Museum and Historical
Society was given a substantial boost this week when the Belles Lettres Study
Club of Monroeville presented the society with a check for $1,000. Mrs. John
McInnis, immediate past president of the study club, presented the check to
Mrs. Rance Carr, president of the society. The study club has had the museum as
its project since 1960 and plans to continue the project. The society, which is
interested in preserving historical and other data of Monroe County, said
volunteer help is still needed as well as items for the museum.
The Monroe County High Tigers, displaying a powerful running
attack, crushed county rival Excel, 48-14, in last Friday night’s action. Roger
Brown and Randy McDonald were the big guns for the Tigers as they scored a
total of 24 points between them and ran up 176 yards total rushing and combined
on two pass plays for 46 yards and a touchdown.
(Other standout MCHS players in that game included Butch
Andress, Danny Ikner, Kenneth Kilpatrick, Rusty Pitts, Benny Ray Powell, Harvey
Tait and Wayne Turberville. Standout Excel players in that game included Amos
Stacey and Stanley Wilson.)
Monroe County High School’s homecoming queen and her court
were elected by the student body last Friday. Charlotte Tatum, 17-year-old
senior, was named to reign over the festivities. Members of her court are Kay
Adam and Elise Jones, 10th grade; and Kay Tomlinson and Elizabeth Harper, 11th
grade.

Southside Baptist Church Organized For Monroeville: 24
Charter Members Enrolled At Official Meeting This Week: A group of Monroeville
Baptists met Tuesday night for the official organization of a second local
church, to be known as the Southside Baptist Church.
A planning committee for the new church was appointed for
direction of a new building. A.B. Blass was chosen chairman of this group,
while M.L. Bergman, Ed Lee, Mrs. Oscar Lambert and Raymond Bayles will serve as
members.
In one of the roughest grid battles of the current season,
the Excel Panthers and the McKenzie Tigers fought their way to a 6-6 tie in
Monroeville last Friday night.
The game ended with a McKenzie player being carried
unconscious from the field, shortly before which Curtis Bowen, Excel fullback,
had received a severely broken arm.
Tension mounted after the final whistle when fans poured out
on the field to mill around players of both teams after a final unfavored
penalty against McKenzie. A potential post-game fracas was quited however.
Final inspection of Monroeville’s regional livestock
coliseum was held this week, E.T. Millsap, Monroe County Probate Judge, stated
Tuesday.
Dedication of the coliseum has been planned for early
spring, he declared.

For the first time in a period of several years, Monroe
County will have a fall fair event, this year’s fair being sponsored by the
Monroe County Post No. 61, American Legion. The fair is scheduled to open on
Mon., Nov. 2, and continue throughout the week.
The event will be held at the Legion Field and the recently
completed hangar at the field will be used to house the exhibits.
In the season’s first battle between county teams, Frisco
City handed Uriah a thorough trouncing to the tune of 57 to 0 on the lighted
field at Uriah Friday night.
A large crowd of fans gathered to see the fight for the
county championship begin with the first of a series of games between high
schools in this county.
Head Of Sixth Generation Dies Near Pine Apple: Mrs. Caroline
Wilkerson died at her home near Pine Apple on Sunday morning. She was 97 years
of age and the oldest member of the family who boasted six living generations
before her passing.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon by the
Rev. J.W. Jones of Frisco City and interment was made in the New Home cemetery
near Excel.
Monday was a busy day in the regular session of Monroe
County Court for the October term. Many cases were brought to trial before
Judge Fountain, and likewise did a number of people settle outside of court.”
