Evergreen’s Chris Hines
grabbed 10 rebounds as the University of Alabama’s men’s basketball team opened
SEC play Saturday with a 75-57 win over Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss.
Hines hauled in 10 rebounds
for the Tide, which was his third double figure rebounding performance in the
past four games.
Hines also had seven points
and an assist in the nationally televised game.
Hillcrest High School’s
varsity boys basketball team jumped out to 2-0 in area play last week when they
downed 4A Area 2 rivals, Thomasville High School and Monroe County.
The Jags, ranked No. 4 in
Class 4A, mangled Monroe, 53-45, Friday in Monroeville and whipped Thomasville,
57-46, Tuesday of last week in Evergreen.

Hillcrest’s team that season included Barron Smith and DeAundre Lyons.)
Three Warriors post double
doubles: Despite having three players post double doubles, Sparta Academy came
up two points shy of a win in a double overtime game against East Memorial
Christian Academy Tuesday of last week in Prattville. EMCA won, 54-52.
Devlin Crosby, Garrett
McClain and Dalton Baggett finished the game with a double double each. Crosby
led with 15 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, six assists and five blocks.
McClain followed with 11 points, 12 rebounds and a steal. Baggett finished the
game with 10 points, 18 rebounds, a steal, an assist and a block.
(Other standout Sparta
players that season included Tom Andrews, Allen Stuart, Jacob Hendrix, Hunter
Hanks, Michael Cook, Drew Hardin, Michael Brown and Dylan Middleton.)
Hillcrest High School’s
varsity girls basketball team dropped to 0-2 in area play last week after
losses to 4A Area 2 opponents, Thomasville and Monroe County.
On Tuesday of last week, the
Lady Jags suffered a 42-26 loss to Thomasville in Evergreen. On Friday night,
Hillcrest suffered a 44-22 loss to Monroe County in Monroeville.
Lady Warriors fall by one to
EMCA: After nearly 2-1/2 weeks off, Sparta Academy’s varsity girls basketball
team came up one point shy Tuesday of last week against East Memorial Christian
Academy in Prattville.
Sparta, ranked No. 4 in the
latest statewide basketball poll, lost to EMCA, 31-30, in Sparta’s first game
since winning the Fort Dale Tournament title game on Dec. 18.
April Palmer led Sparta with
18 points, two rebounds and five steals. (Other standout players on Sparta’s
team that season included Savannah Brown, Emily Booker, Madelyn Black, Grace
Matlock and Stephanie Martin.)

Coach Mark Fedor and Coach
Gerry Watson flank two of Hillcrest High School’s premier athletes. Kelvin
Rudolph and Ryan Meeks were both named to all-state football honors this past
season. Kelvin was named to the first team sports writers poll and honorable
mention Birmingham News, and Ryan was named to honorable mention by the
sportswriters poll and Birmingham news. Meeks is the brother of former Denver
Bronco’s player and Evergreen native Bob Meeks.

The Monroe Academy Vols defeated
Sparta Academy’s Warriors in the finals of the boys division, and the Fort Dale
Academy Warriors defeated Sparta in the finals of the girls division to win the
championships of the Sparta Holiday Tournament held in the school gymnasium on
Dec. 29 and 30, according to Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren
Jr.
The Sparta boys defeated
Wilcox Academy’s Wildcats handily, 76-64, in the opening round as Jeff Johnson
hit for 30 points and Vince Watts 20. Joe McInvale had eight; Ed Carrier and Terry
Shipp, seven each; Scotty Grace, three; and Andy Hammonds, one.
Monroe’s Vols outshot the
Warriors, 75-60, in the championship game in spite of Terry Shipp hitting for
19 points and Jeff Johnson 17. Joe McInvale added eight; Vince Watts, six; Andy
Hammonds, four; Wes Brown, three; and Ed Carrier, two.
Cathy Cope was the only
Warrior girl in double figures as she meshed 10 points in a game won by Fort
Dale, 39-29, in the championship tilt. Karen Brown had seven points; Cheri
Johnson, six; Julie Saunders, four; and Missy Price, two.
Julie Saunders, Karen Brown
and Jeff Johnson were named to the All Tournament teams, according to Warren.
Both the Sparta Academy
varsity teams, boys and girls, were eliminated in the first round of the
Greenville Academy Christmas Tournament, played in Greenville on Dec. 19 and
20.
Monroe Academy defeated the
Warriors, 77-47, in the boys division of the tourney, and the Sparta girls lost
to Wilcox Academy, 44-24.

JAN. 13, 1966
Brent Thornley captures
awards at QB Banquet: Brent Thornley, a senior and co-captain of the 1965
football team at Evergreen High School, won both top awards at the Evergreen
Quarterback Club’s annual football banquet last Friday night at the EHS
lunchroom.
QB President Waynard Price
was master of ceremonies and recognized special guests. The invocation was
given by the Rev. Frank Scott.
The featured speaker was
Coach Richard Williamson of the University of Alabama. Coach Williamson made a
fine talk on “the values I got, and you are getting and will get from
football.” He stressed three things he had learned from football that he
thought would help any young man in life as well as sport: 1. You must be
dedicated, determined and willing to pay the price to succeed. 2. You must get
along with your teammates and learn to depend on them and be dependable to
them. 3. Perhaps most important you must learn to work.
Evergreen Jaycee President
Harold Ryals presented the Jaycees’ Most Outstanding Player of the Year Award
to Thornley. EHS Principal Morris Ward presented the D.T. Stuart Football
Sportsmanship Trophy to Thornley in behalf of the donor, Tal Stuart. Ward said:
“This is the most prized trophy of all, the winner was selected by his coaches
and his teammates, those who know best.”
Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Nichols and
daughter, Margaret, and Sammy and Andy Higdon attended the Senior Bowl Game in
Mobile Saturday.

JAN. 11, 1951
The Repton High Bulldogs did
what no other Conecuh County team has done in some nine or 10 years last Friday
night when they turned under the Evergreen High Aggie cagers by a 44-30 count.
The game was played in Repton’s fine gym before a crowd of several hundred fans
who enjoyed every minute of it.
(Outstanding players on
Repton’s team, which was led by head coach Charles Pouncey, included Andrews, Burt,
Butts, Kelly and McMillan. Outstanding players on Evergreen’s team included
Gwyn Daniels, Ed Hooks, Gillis Morgan, Jeff Moorer, Bill Watson and Bobby
Wells.)
The Blue Devils of Conecuh
County High School, Castleberry, handed the Evergreen High Aggies their second
loss to county competition in a decade here Tuesday night (in Evergreen). The
Devils of Coach M.C. Thomasson staged a terrific last half rally to come from
behind and win a thrilling 40-38 verdict over Coach Wendell Hart’s Aggies.
William Bradley led the way
to the Devil triumph with 13 points. Ralph Graddy had eight; Hart, seven;
William Reeves, four; Palmer and Norris, three each; and Reed, two, for
Castleberry.
Shirley Frazier played
outstanding ball for Evergreen in his first varsity start. Frazier topped the
scorers with 15 points and played a fine floor game. Gwyn Daniels had seven; Ed
Hooks, six; Jeff Moorer, six; and Gillis Morgan, four, for the Aggies.
The Class AA First District
Basketball Tournament will be held again this year in Evergreen High’s
beautiful Memorial Gym. Dates of the tournament are March 1, 2 and 3.
