The Evergreen City Council
put its stamp of approval on two important resolutions earlier this week,
including a resolution that named a local football player as the city’s special
athletic ambassador.
During a council meeting
Tuesday night at Evergreen City Hall, the council voted unanimously in favor of
a resolution “to celebrate the athletic achievement” of Drew Davis.
Davis, the University of
Alabama’s starting right offensive tackle for the past two seasons, closed out
his college football career on Jan. 7 when Alabama claimed its 13th
national championship with a 37-21 win over Texas in the BCS National
Championship Game in Pasadena, Calif.
Despite the fact that
Alabama’s men’s basketball team dropped to 1-2 in the SEC during the past week
after losses to Vanderbilt and Arkansas, Alabama’s head coach praised the play
of Evergreen’s Chris Hines.
After a 65-64 loss to
Vanderbilt in Tuscaloosa Wednesday of last week, UA head coach Anthony Grant
said in the post-game press conference that “Chris Hines came in and gave us
some good energy, as did (Alabama forward) Tony Mitchell and the other guys
that came in.”
Hines, a 6-8, 220-pound
forward, played 17 minutes and finished the game with six points, three
rebounds and an assist.
Sparta Academy’s varsity boys
basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season last Thursday night
with a 51-21 win over South Choctaw Academy in Evergreen.

Sparta Warriors lose close
one to Greenville: The Sparta Academy Warriors lost a close one to the
Greenville Tornadoes, 53-52, in a game played Jan. 13 at Sparta.
Adrian Mitchell had 13 points
and Larry Wright 11 points to lead the scoring for the Warriors. Others scoring
were Brent Worrell with eight points; Michael Pate, seven points; Jason Miller,
six points; Nicholas Jones, four points; and James Johnson, three points.
Sparta girls lose to
Greenville Tornadoes: The Sparta Academy girls basketball team lost to the
Greenville Tornadoes, 64-27, in a game played Jan. 13 at Sparta.
Nikki Jones led the Lady
Warriors with 14 points. Rounding out the scoring was Carrie Lambert with seven
points; Janet Kendrick, three points; Aundria Griffin, two points; and Missy
Westwood, one point.
Sparta JV boys defeat
Greenville Tornadoes: The Sparta Academy JV boys basketball team defeated the
Greenville Tornadoes, 50-16, in a game played Jan. 13 at Sparta.
Jason Robinson scored 12
points and Jason Shehan scored 10 points to lead the JV Warriors to victory.
Rounding out the scoring for the JV boys were Charlie Ward eight points; Rod
McIntyre, five points; Chris Mitchell and Seth Mitchell, four points each;
Shannon Brown, three points; Jake Adams and Seth McIntyre, two points each.

JAN. 17, 1980
Edgar Tatum is shown with his
championship pointer, “Bob.” The white and liver pointer won first place in the
Northwest Florida Pointer and Setter Club’s Field Trials held Jan. 12 and 13 in
Munson, Fla. “Bob” was braced against 45 other dogs and had four perfect finds
in winning first place.
The Sparta Academy Warriors
placed three players on the Alabama Private Schools Association All-District
III Football Team. Ronnie McKenzie, Terry Peacock and Greg Crabtree were all
honored, according to Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr.
The Evergreen Aggies ran
their record to 13-1 with two victories this week. On Monday night, they
defeated 4A Atmore, 61-50. On Tuesday, the Aggies traveled up to Greenville and
captured a 73-51 victory.
(Top Evergreen players in
those games included Johnny Allen, Russell Bozeman, Joe Mitchell, Sanford Moye,
Perona Rankins, Philander Rodgers and Arturo Scott.)
The Sparta Academy Warriors
swept the Greenville Academy Tornadoes as they won the boys varsity and junior
varsity and girls games here Jan. 8.
Terry Shipp went on a scoring
spree as he hit 15 of 16 free throws and totaled 31 points to lead the varsity
to an easy 75-60 win.
The Warriors girls continued
their victory string as they romped to an easy 35-17 victory. Missi Thacker led
the scoring with 13 points.

Repton High wins News grid
trophy: Repton High’s Bulldogs cashed in their best season for The Birmingham
News Division 1-A football trophy in 1964.
The News Trophy will be
presented at a special student assembly to be announced later.
Often walking the tight rope
but falling only once, the ‘Dogs posted an unusual 5-1-3 record.
With Class A teams in The
News’ first division having tough sledding generally, most of them having to
make up their schedules with larger schools, Repton got home with nobody breaking
down their neck.
Repton got into a deadlock
groove after the second game and ran through three no-decision contests in a
row.
It started on a stormy night
with Lyeffion in a scoreless tie and the next week it continued with
Coffeeville in a no-score game. Then the following week with AA Red Level the
scores came but so did Red Level’s and that one ended, 12-12.
The loss was to McKenzie the
next week, 13-6, with a Bulldog back swinging out and heading for home from the
two-yard line late in the game only to drop the leather.
(Repton’s head coach during
the 1964 season was Gene Madison, and players on that game included Capt. Jimmy
Bradley, Nicky Thompson, Robert Lowery, Dwight Jerkins and Glenn Baggett.)

0-0; Coffeeville, 0-0; Red Level, 12-12; McKenzie, lost, 13-6; Dozier, won,

The Evergreen High Aggies
lost a heartbreaking, 35-33 ball game to their traditional T.R. Miller High
rivals here Monday night, but not before putting on one of the fiercest
struggles ever made by an Evergreen team.
Guerry Moorer set the scoring
pace for Evergreen with 11 points. Dickey Bozeman, starting at guard instead of
forward, sank eight and Gwyn Daniels dropped six for the Aggies.
Junior Allen led the Millers
with 12 points. (Gene) Prestwood and Bobby Long tallied seven each.
(Other standout Evergreen
players in that game included Jack Cunningham, Gillis Morgan, Jeff Moorer and
“Pistol Pete” Wells.)
The Evergreen High Aggies,
struggling to break out of an early season slump, will meet one of the most
colorful teams to play here this year when they tangle with the Cuthbert (Ga.)
five in Memorial Gym Friday night. The Cuthbert-Aggie bout gets underway at
8:00.
Cuthbert has plenty of color.
They wear good-looking purple and white uniforms with, get this, knee-high
matching socks.
The Georgiana Panthers poured
12 points through the hoop in the final three minutes here last Friday night as
they trounced the Evergreen Aggies, 50-31.
Big Guerry Moorer tossed in
seven from the field and one from the foul line to lead the Aggies with 15
points. Jack Cunningham dropped five points for the Aggies.
Harville led the Panthers
with 15 points. Don Simmons hit for 14 and Shell for 12 to account for most of
the Panther points.
