Local weather observer Harry
Ellis reported .01 inches of rain on Feb. 24 in Evergreen. He also reported a
high of 70 degrees on Feb. 22 and lows of 25 on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25. Total
rainfall for the month of February 2010 was 3.50 inches and total snowfall was
five inches, he reported.
Conecuh County Sheriff Edwin
L. Booker announced this week that he has qualified for the Democratic
nomination for re-election as Sheriff of Conecuh County in the upcoming June
primary.
Booker served as Sheriff from
1975 to 1995 and then from 2006 to the present.
David Cook Jr. has announced
his candidacy for re-election to the Conecuh County Board of Education,
District 2. He is currently serving his fourth term as a member of the board
and has served as board president for 12 years.
Ali Congdon of Bermuda
fielded this year’s Reserve Grand Champion during the 65th Annual
Conecuh County Steer & Heifer Show Monday of last week at Breaking Ridge
Farms in Evergreen. The steer tipped the scales at 1,110 pounds and sold for
$1.50 per pound.
Members of the Evergreen
Garden Club attended the Conecuh Forestry Planning Committee tree giveaway
event Wednesday of last week at T.L. Sims Memorial Park in Evergreen. In honor
of Arbor Day, club members planted an oak tree at the park with the assistance
of urban forester Jack Rowe, who donated the tree and assisted in planting it.

Local weather observer Harry Ellis reported no rain
between Feb. 20 and Feb. 26, 1995. He reported highs of 73 degrees on Feb. 23
and Feb. 26 and lows of 33 degrees on Feb. 21, Feb. 22 and Feb. 24.
Evergreen Baptist Church celebrating 150 anniversary:
Evergreen Baptist Church is celebrating its Sesquicentennial during March 1995.
Its pastor, the Rev. Jack Williamson and its Sesquicentennial Committee invite
the public to participate in special emphases scheduled for March 5, March 12
and March 19. The Founders Day Service will be observed on Sun., March 19, and
will be followed by the noon meal in the Activities Building. Historical items
will be on display all month.
With a current membership of 602 and a current budget
of $218,000 and under the leadership of
a beloved pastor and effective preacher, season by 20 years of service locally,
the Evergreen Baptist Church is poised to move with strength into the 21st
Century (just five years away).
Mrs. Betty Oliver was named as the Employee of the Year
at Natural Decorations, Inc. recently. She is shown being presented a cash award
by Joe Gordy, co-owner of NDI. Mrs. Oliver also received a plaque.
Dr. Stanley Barnes was one of the featured speakers at
the Black History Month program at Evergreen Junior High School Monday. Dr.
Douglas Littles, Dean of Students at Reid State Technical College, was the
other featured speaker.

Local weather observer Earl
Windham reported .71 inches of rain on March 1. He also reported a high of 79
degrees on Feb. 25 and a low of 20 degrees on March 2.
DJ John Bolton of Radio
Station WBLO was glad to be back spinning platters last Thursday when the local
station began broadcasting again after being “off the air” since Feb. 16 so
that broadcast equipment could be repaired and improved and the station’s
“signal” expanded.”
Dr. Jim Bricken has announced
the opening of his practice of veterinary medicine here. Dr. Bricken is
practicing in the Evergreen Animal Health Center building on Old Sparta
(Yarborough) Road.
Elections are set Tuesday,
Mar. 11: Conecuh County electors will vote Tuesday in the first of at least
four elections to be held this year. Actually, three elections will be held
Tuesday, but you can vote in only two of them. Both the Democratic and
Republican parties are holding presidential preferential primary elections to
elect delegates to the National Party Conventions this summer, but you can vote
in only one of these.
The other election Tuesday is
to decide the fate of eight proposed amendments to the State Constitution.
These will be at the top of the voting machine and require a yes or no vote.

Durlyn Davis is Miss Lyeffion
High School for 1965 having been crowned at the annual FHA Beauty Pageant.
Durlyn is a senior and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Davis.
Miss Margaret Hagood,
Alabama’s 1964 Junior Miss, crowned the 1965 Junior Miss, Miss Heather Strait
of Montgomery, at the Junior Miss Pageant in Birmingham recently. Margaret
completed her reign with the coronation of Heather. She is the daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Joseph H. Hagood of Evergreen.
Final rites held for Mrs.
Salter: Mrs. Ann Brooks Salter, age 50, died unexpectedly at her residence on
Liberty Hill Drive Friday morning. She was one of the few women to ever hold
elective office in Conecuh County, having served as Circuit Clerk and Register.
Mrs. Salter served as Circuit
Clerk by appointment in the 1940s, and as Deputy Clerk when her husband, who
held the office, was recalled to active Army duty during the Korean War. In
1952, when her husband was on active duty and due to time limitations could not
qualify for re-election, she filed for the office and won it.
Robert Lee Page, age 72, died
at the home of Mike O’Brien in Baker, La. on Sat., Feb. 27.
Mr. Page was born in
Evergreen on March 4, 1892. He was employed by the L&N Railroad Co. as
train dispatcher and telegrapher for a number of years, working at local
stations from Montgomery to Mobile, including about seven years at Georgiana.
He later became associated with the Illinois Central Railroad as train
dispatcher and after 41 years service, he retired as chief train dispatcher in
1958 with a total of more than 53 years service with two railroads.

W.K. Horton Passes At Montgomery
Monday Night: William Kendall Horton, age 86, died at a Montgomery hospital
Monday night following an extended illness.
Mr. Horton was a pioneer
citizen and lifelong resident of this county. He was born and reared on a farm
10 miles from Evergreen on the Brooklyn Highway and lived there until a few
years ago when he moved to Evergreen. He owned a large farm and thousands of
acres of timber land and engaged in farming, timbering and mercantile business.
He also owned considerable business and residence property in Evergreen.
He was president of the Bank
of Evergreen, director of All States Life Insurance Co., Montgomery,
stockholder in Andala Co., Andalusia, and had many and varied interests
elsewhere.
Funeral services were held
from New Bethel Baptist Church Wednesday at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. Sam
Granade, pastor of the Evergreen Baptist Church. Interment was in the family
lot in Horton Cemetery.
Thomas Mason Mills, age 74,
widely known and highly respected citizen of this city, died in his sleep at
the home of his son, Carl H. Mills, in Pensacola Wed., Feb. 22.
Mr. Mills was born in Wilcox
County at Pineapple on March 6, 1875. He spent his early life in that community
and in Butler County. He moved to Evergreen about 35 years ago and made his home
here until about one month ago when he moved to live with his son in Pensacola
because of his failing health. He was for many years connected with the L.L.
Moorer Store, large mercantile establishment here in former years.
