Sparta Academy seniors Ashley
Hammonds and Jill Pate participated in the AISA All Star basketball game held
Feb. 24, 2001 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Ashley is the daughter of
Wayne Hammonds and the late Pam Hammonds, and Jill is the daughter of Joel and
Carol Pate.
Sally Hartley elected Auburn
Tigerette: Sally Hartley, daughter of Tommy Hartley and Gloria Hartley, has
been elected to serve as a member of the Auburn Tigerettes/Tiger Hosts for the
2001-2002 football recruiting season. The Tigerettes and Tigers Hosts are the
official hostesses and hosts of the Auburn University Athletic Department.
In addition to providing
moral support to the Auburn Tigers, they are active in football recruiting and
act as tour guides to people visiting Auburn. Sally is a freshman from
Evergreen, majoring in Public Relations.
“The Tigeretts and Tiger
Hosts are extremely important to the success of our football program,” said
Auburn Head Football Coach Tommy Tuberville. “They assist us in so many ways
during the season and recruiting, they are invaluable. Much of the success we
have had in recruiting comes from these young people and their efforts to help
prospective student athletes experience student life at Auburn. The Tigerettes
and Tigers Hosts do an outstanding job in a classy, professional manner.”

March 18, at 7 p.m. at the Court House. Anyone interested in playing is urged

Football is the order of the
day, or rather afternoon, at Sparta Academy as Coach Mickey Goneke is
conducting Spring practice. Blocking is a basic skill that takes hard work, and
more hard work, to develop as these linemen are learning in this “one-on-one”
drill.
Backs must be able to block,
not just run, Coach Mickey Goneke tells his Sparta Academy players. Here the
coach is showing one of his backs the proper stance as he prepares to throw a
block. Spring practice is in its second week at the private school. Sparta will
field its first team this Fall.

Corner” by Bob Bozeman – “Bob Kendall brought me an interesting article from a
recent issue of The Tuscaloosa News. It was written by Bill Plott, Sunday
editor of the paper, and is self explanatory.
“Strangely enough, though,
there have been two instances where participants in the state (basketball)
tournament drew byes in the first round.
“The first occurred during
the 1928-29 meet when Mortimer Jordan got a free ride in the opening round and
advanced to the quarterfinals unchallenged. The Jefferson County school was to
have played Evergreen, representing the Second District.
“Unfortunately for the South
Alabama team, the tournament came during an unprecedented rainy season that had
created flood conditions throughout much of the state. Evergreen was unable to
secure transportation to Tuscaloosa because of the floods and had to withdraw.”
Knowing that Bob would want
the record kept straight, I checked the 1929 editions of The Courant and found
that the real reason the team didn’t go to Tuscaloosa was that Evergreen High’s
girls had won their district tournament and arrangements (probably financial)
couldn’t be made to send both teams.
Quoting from the March 7,
1929 edition of The Evergreen Courant: “By finishing second, the Aggies, for
the second successive year, won the right, along with Murphy High, to represent
the First District in the state tourney, but had to forego the trip to
Tuscaloosa as arrangements could not be made to send both boys and girls teams
to the state meets this year.”
A year later, Evergreen again
won the right to go to the state meet and declined. Here is Coach “Abe”
Robinson’s explanation of that in the Feb. 27, 1930 Courant: “Coach Robinson
states that due to financial reasons and to the fact that no team in this
district, in his opinion, can hope to win in the state tournament, he waived
his team’s right to Murphy High.”

EHS AGGIES OFF TO STATE
TOURNAMENT; BATTLE KINSTON IN FIRST GAME TODAY: The Evergreen High School
Aggies became the first basketball team in the history of the school and the
first team in Conecuh County to win a place in the State Basketball Tournament
in Tuscaloosa by virtue of their winning second place honors in the First
District Tournament in Mobile last week.
The Aggies meet Kinston High
in the fourth game of the opening round of the State Class AA Basketball
Tournament, which gets underway this morning. The Evergreen-Kinston game is
slated for 3:30 p.m.
The Aggies will be paced by
Big Randy White, who is the highest scorer in the history of the school with a
total of 833 points in 28 games this year for a neat 30-point per game average.
Wayne Frazier, Eddie Kelly,
Mickey Joyner and Robert King make up the rest of the starting team for
Evergreen. The capable substitutes are Ronnie Edson, Harry Pugh, Wendell
Tolbert, Walter Carrier and Timmie Boykin.
Aggies Win 2nd
Place In District AA Tournament In Mobile: The EHS Aggies waltzed through the
first three games of the First District Class AA Tournament in Mobile last week
only to lose to powerful Murphy of Mobile in the final game of the tourney.
Evergreen opened up the
Mobile Tourney with an easy win over Monroeville Friday afternoon by a 63-41
count with the reserves playing most of the second half of the game.
Friday night, the Aggies took
on Grove Hill and romped over them to the tune of 71-24 with the first string
watching a good part of the game from the bench.
Foley met Evergreen in a hard
fought semi-final battle Saturday afternoon, which saw the Aggies fighting to
hold onto their lead in the final minutes of the game after holding a 21-point
lead at one time during the third quarter. Foley fell by a 69-59 count.
Murphy had a comparatively
easy game with first-seeded McGill Saturday afternoon and also had an hour and
a half more rest than Evergreen before they met in the finals. The Panthers ran
away from the Aggies as the Evergreen team was as cold as the proverbial wedge
and never could get started as they fell, 73-54.
Evergreen placed two men on
the All-District team with Randy White and Wayne Frazier both gaining
positions. White was the tourney’s high scorer with a total of 115 points in
four games for a 29-point average.

MARCH 13, 1941
Aggies End Season, 13 Wins, 7
Losses: By defeating Monroeville, 47-28, last week the Evergreen High School
Aggies ended their 1941 cage season with 13 wins against seven losses,
including the three games played in the bi-county tournament.
The Aggies outscored their
opponents, 512-410, with victories ranging from 75-14 to 26-8. The five leading
scorers on the squad and their points are Derrill Moorer, 158 points; Fred
Owens, 101; Randy Moorer, 73; Judson Murphy, 73; and Knud Nielsen, 35.
Coach James Smith produced a
better than average team this year, experiencing occasional setbacks as even
the best do. When the squad really began to click, however, it was a credit to
the colors it wore.
HIGH SCHOOL: Basketball games
are over. Some tournaments are over – others nearing the finish. Our local boys
had hard luck at Uriah. Better luck next time, boys. We have organized our
softball teams and are enjoying the games very much.
At last, football stadium is
getting started. Perhaps in the distant future we may have one of the best in
the district. We are very much in need of it. We will have an opportunity to
show what we really can do.
