The 1992 Sparta Academy
Warriors will have big shoes to fill, trying to better the record of last
year’s state runner-up championship team. According to Head Coach Mike Bledsoe,
this will be a “rebuilding year” for the Warriors. A brighter note for the
Warrior faithful will be the largest offensive and defensive lines in recent
memory. The Warriors begin their quest for glory Friday night in Luverne,
facing off against the Cougars of Crenshaw Christian Academy. Joining Coach
Bledsoe on the coaching staff are Headmaster David Clanton and assistant coach
Michael Bledsoe.
The 1992 Sparta Academy
Warrior Cheerleading Squad will be cheering on their Warriors this Friday night
in Luverne to open the 1992 gridiron season. The Warriors play the Crenshaw
Christian Academy Cougars. Pictured are co-captains Stephanie Booth and Julie
Brundage, Rachel Bohannon, Regina Hawsey, Kelly Booker, Nann Castleberry,
captain Kelly Booker and Carla Grimes.
Shane Lavigne, son of Mrs.
Joyce Lavigne Harper of Evergreen, is the recipient of the 1992 Wendell Hart
Scholarship. This prestigious award was announced Tuesday by the scholarship
committee.
Shane is a graduate of
Hillcrest High School where he was a member of the Aerospace Club, Student
Government Association and Agri-business. He will be attending Troy State
University in the fall where he will pursue a degree in pre-engineering.

AUG. 25, 1977
Aggies open here tonight with
W.S. Neal: The 1977 edition of the Evergreen High School Aggies will open their
football season here tonight when they meet traditional rival W.S. Neal.
Kickoff in Brooks Stadium is set for 7:30 against the usually powerful Golden
Eagles.
Head Coach Charles Branum and
assistants Ronnie Brogden and Danny Covin have been working their charges hard
in an attempt to get the season off to a winning start. Prospects appear good
for a brighter season than last year for the Aggies. The coaches feel that with
a few breaks and no serious injuries the Aggies will be winners.
Players expected to start
tonight include QB Tony Rogers, LHB William McCreary, RHB John Crosby, FB Greg
Johnson, WR John Ingram or Phillip Harold, TE Byron Bradley or John Ingram,
tackles Warren Locke and Keith Rabb, and guards Terrell Rabb and Johnny Hill.
Mark Phillips and Wendell Parker will not be starting due to illness.
Others players expected to
see action are Mike Adams, Chris McNeil, Greg Thomas, Calvin Thomas, Earnest
Williams, Tommy Freeman, Garvin Freeman, Sanford Moye, Johnny Stowers, Melvin
Pitts, Willie Willis, Leo Cobb, Ernie Edeker, Frank Davis and Jimmy Lambert.
Sparta opens here Saturday:
The Sparta Academy Warriors will open their 1977 football season here Saturday
night at Stuart-McGehee Field. Kickoff is set for eight o’clock against their
traditional rival, the Greenville Academy Tornadoes.
Head Coach Mike Bledsoe and
assistant “Bo” Owens state that their squad of 21 has been working hard and
showing lots of enthusiasm. They believe that barring injuries the Warriors can
give the Tornadoes a good game, if they play at 110 percent.
Sparta Sports Information
Director Byron Warren Jr. reports that Greenville will bring a big, talented
squad to town including a tackle-sized fullback.
The Sparta Academy Quarterback
Club will be serving barbecue pork plates prior to the game, starting at five
o’clock.

Aggies look good in first
drills: Optimism, hard work and enthusiasm are the key words in the Evergreen
High Aggie camp this week with 38 candidates for the 1962 edition of the Green
and White go through opening drills.
Coach John Law Robinson
wasted no time getting his charges down to cases as preparation for the opener
with Atmore here on Thursday night, Sept. 13, moved at a fast tempo. Monday and
Tuesday the Aggies went through conditioning drills in sweat togs, but
yesterday they had on the pads for the first “knocking” session.
Robinson also welcomed Monday
his new assistant, Line Coach Fred Allmon.
Robinson singled out two
non-lettermen as the most improved men on the squad over spring drills. Tackle
Stan Coker, up from the “B” team, and Halfback Bob Ivey, also a “B” grad, have
shown up well.

Dees, Marshall Dees, Jimmy Ellis, Joe Glass, DeWayne Grace, Benny Hammonds,

was on the team, but was lost for the season due to a surgery.)

Greenies Eliminate Flomaton
In Playoff: Evergreen won the honor of playing the winner of the
McCullough-Atmore series by defeating Flomaton two straight games in the
elimination playoff.
The first game of the
championship playoff will be in Brooks Stadium Sunday at three o’clock. This
will be the final game to be played in Evergreen this season.
Big Wade Nobles, a fastball
right-hander, came through with an 8-3 win Thursday to solve acting-manager Zell
Murphy’s pre-game pitching worries. Making his debut as a pitcher, Nobles gave
up only nine scattered safeties and allowed only one earned run to cross the
platter. Harry Brooks, Flomaton hurler, held the locals to only six hits, but
was given very little support by his teammates who made eight costly errors.
Eben Moorer and Joe McDonald collected two blows each to pace the Greenies to
their 8-3 victory.
Manager Hart opened on the
mound for the locals Sunday but had to call on Edsel Johnson to take over in
the ninth when he ran into some trouble. The Greenies drove out a total of 12
base blows off two Flomaton pitchers, one of which was a 365-foot home with two
men aboard by Nobles in the third inning. White had three singles to his credit
to gain batting honors for the winners.

This gives Evergreen an
impressive and rugged schedule. Seven games will be played under the lights on
the home field.

J.W. THURMOND IS CO. CHECKER CHAMPION: Castleberry, Aug.
24 – Jones Wylie Thurmond is Conecuh County’s checker champion.
The Castleberry bank president won the title late Friday
with a 25 to 20 victory over Haskew Page in the finals. The new champion, who
is jocularly accused of playing checkers for a living and being a banker on the
side, had previously beaten Ira Price, 10 to 1, and Forrest Castleberry, 15 to
13, to win his way into the finals.
In a team match here yesterday, Castleberry easily
defeated Repton, principally through the effective playing of Page. The Repton
team which made the trip over was composed of G.W. Reid, W.R. Boulware, James
Stacey and “Bo” Long.
