The Evergreen Courant's Sports Flashback for Sept. 12, 2016

Monroe Tigers rip Aggies 33-6: With a strong assist from penalties and injuries the Evergreen Aggies dropped their second straight of the 1973 season, this one by the score of 33-6 to the Monroe County Tigers. The Brooks Stadium loss brought their record to 1-2.
Halftime found the Aggies who were minus regular quarterback Mike Faulkner, behind 14-0. Darris Champion, a full back for the last two games, took the reins for the evening but could not find paydirt until late in the game.
With four seconds on the clock, “Champ” sneaked over from the one for the hosts’ six points. Champion and Kenny Scott picked up good yardage but Faulkner’s loss hampered their air attack.

Pike hands Sparta first loss 14-8: Pike Liberal Arts didn’t bring a Trojan Horse from Troy Friday night, but they did bring an ancient trick play that provided the margin for a 14-8 win over Sparta Academy’s Warriors, 14-8.
Sparta kicked off to open the game and Pike returned to its 38. The Pike center went up to the ball while the rest of the team stood over near the sidelines to his left. The Warriors lined up defensively in front of the ball waiting for Pike to break its huddle. Suddenly the center scooped up the ball, tossed it to James Flowers who ran unmolested for 62 yards and the score. Steve Watkins went in for the two-pointer to make it 8-0 with the game only seconds old.
(Sam Skipper scored Sparta’s only touchdown on a 12-yard run. Buddy Monroe threw to Eddie Hooks for the two-point conversion. Other top plays in the game included a 43-yard run by Sparta’s Bruce Hutcheson.)

CCTS Football Team Prepares: Head mentor John Kennedy of Evergreen’s Conecuh County Training School Eagles football team, began Thursday ironing out the muscular kinks in preparation for the 1958 season.
About 40 eager and husky football players reported Thursday, including 15 lettermen.
The Eagle first home game will be with Covington County Training School of Andalusia Sept. 27. A release of the complete football schedule will appear in this paper in the next issue.

Lou Vickery is victor over Aggies by 7-0: A scrapping, crippled band of Evergreen Aggies lost their 1958 football opener to Atmore by a 7 to 0 count here Friday night. The game was played on a water-soaked field and off-and-on showers liberally sprinkled players and the fair crowd in attendance throughout the game.
The first half belonged to Atmore’s Blue Devils and the last half to the Aggies, but the Devils pushed across a score in their half and that was the difference. Actually, the difference was a big, hard-running fullback, Lou Vickery, who shouldered the Atmore offense and defense.
Vickery personally ground out the Atmore score eating up 56 yards through battling Aggie defenses on 12 carries for the touchdown. The tally came early in the second period and the Blue Devils were never able to mount another offensive thrust.
Coaches Wendell Hart and Jeff Moorer were pleased with the play of their youthful club. Defensive play was outstanding and although never able to carry a sustained drive to pay dirt, the Aggies did show a strong running game. They did not throw a pass.
Evergreen’s chances suffered critically with the injury of quarterback Billy Melton in practice Monday. Melton was slated to start but busted a collarbone in scrimmage and is out til midseason.
Veteran utility man Jimmy Bell, a scheduled starter at end, was called into the signal-calling post after the injury. Bell’s performance was excellent in consideration of the limited practice he had at the spot. His play-calling was fine, defensive play excellent, and he ran well on the sneak.
Evergreen showed exceptional strength in the middle of the line. Capt. Paul Pace gave spirited leadership and was a defensive and blocking standout. Guards George Bolton, alternate captain, and Byron Warren Jr., played fine ball both ways and it was through this game that most Aggie gains were made.
Wayne Peacock, 230-pound giant, and Ken Tucker delivered fine first game performances at tackle. The play of Leon McKenzie, Elvin Higgins and Wayne Stinson at end was pleasing to coaches and spectators. McKenzie punted exceptionally well. Tucker also booted skillfully.
Robbie Boykin’s fine all-around performance paced the play of the Aggies’ exceptionally well-balanced backfield. Boykin drove strongly on the first down situations, was stout defensively and blocked sharply.
Robert Ellington and Ceylon Strong made a fine team at the halfbacks. Ellington was steady gainer on offense and a rock on defense. Strong in his first start showed signs of stardom with game-seasoning.

The Evergreen Aggies hit the road tomorrow night for their first game away from home. They will meet the powerful Andalusia Bulldogs at eight o’clock at the Andalusia Municipal Stadium.
