Jackets Tigers advance in
meet: Lyeffion’s Yellow Jackets and Greenville’s Tigers won first round
victories in Evergreen High School’s Holiday Invitational Tournament. Finals in
the event are scheduled at 8:15 tonight, preceded by a consolation tilt at
seven o’clock.
Lyeffion downed Frisco City,
57 to 50, in the opening game Tuesday night. Sammy Williams poured in 19 points
to pace the Jackets. Smith and Daniels hit for 14 each, Norwood six and Wilson
four. Larry Eddins netted 14 points and Weeks 12 for the losers.
Lyeffion was to meet highly
rated Fairhope in the opening game Wednesday night.
Greenville’s Tigers,
defending champions, edged Uriah, 66 to 64, in a thrilling nightcap.
Greenville was to meet the
host Evergreen club in the final game last night. The Greenville-Evergreen
winner meets the winner of the Lyeffion-Fairhope match in the finals tonight
with the losers playing in a consolation preliminary.

Large Deer Killed On Hunt
Last Thursday: A deer, which old time hunters say was the largest ever killed
in this county, was killed on a hunt last Thursday. The deer was brought to
earth by Luke Foshee and weighed 215 pounds. A number of hunters of long
standing state that it was the largest buck ever killed in Conecuh County. The
buck had 13 points and another that had been broken.
While this writer does not
support the veracity of the following story, it is being told around town. ‘Tis
said that E.B. Horton was on a stand about a hundred yards from Luke’s. When he
heard the shot E.B. called out, “Did you get him, Luke?” To which Foshee
replied, “I shot, didn’t I?”
Twenty-One Aggies Awarded
Letters At Annual Football Banquet Tuesday: In celebration of the first undefeated
season in the school’s history, Coaches Wendell Hart, John Lockwood and members
of the 1949 Evergreen High School football team were feted at the Evergreen
Quarterback Club’s annual Football Banquet Tuesday night. The cheerleaders were
also guests of the QBs at the (otherwise) stag affair held in the beautiful new
lunchroom at the Evergreen City School.
QB Prexy Tal Stuart emceed
the program that included a number of top performers on the knife and fork
circuit. The principal address was made by Chaplain Roy M. Terry of Maxwell Air
Force Base. Terry was introduced by J. Cliff Harper, executive-secretary of the
Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Hard-hitting fullback Jim
Ryan and all-state left end Dickey Bozeman, both seniors, tied for the first
D.T. Stuart Sportsmanship Award. Each received a trophy. The presentation off
the award was made by Harper.
Coach Hart awarded letters to
21 members of the 1949 squad. He announced that the team had elected Jeff
Moorer captain for 1950. Gillis “Little Red” Morgan was chosen alternate
captain. Seniors Jack Cunningham, captain, and John Greel Ralls, alternate
captain, are the retiring Aggie leaders.
Principal J.J. (Jack) Finklea
expressed the appreciation of the school to the Quarterbacks, coaches, faculty,
team, cheerleaders and citizens for the fine spirit of cooperation that had
made the scholastic and athletic program of the school successful.
Other prominent guests
present included: Coaches Ben Ennis and Joe Kilgrow of the University of
Alabama, Dick McGowin of the Auburn coaching staff, Frank Sego, publicity
director of the Montgomery Rebels. Sego represented Max Moseley, Sports Editor
of the Montgomery Advertiser. Moseley could not be present because of illness.
Seniors receiving letters and
the number of years they have lettered are as follows: Jim Ryan (four), Jack
Cunningham (three), John Greel Ralls (three), Bruce Johnson (three), Dickey
Bozeman (three), Bertie Hassel (two), Guerry Moorer (one), James Barlow (one)
and Cecil Middleton (one).
The following juniors
received letters: Ed Hooks, Shelton Craig, Jeff Moorer, Douglas Potts, Max
Pope, Franklin Williamson, Cecil Culbreth, Pete Wells, Howard Quinley.
Sophomores: Gillis Morgan,
Donahue Edson and Gwyn Daniels.
Other squad members
entertained Tuesday night are Sam Cope, Cleveland Robinson, Allen Edson,
Wallace Miller, Pace Bozeman, Sammy Robinson, Paul Hanks, Clinton Cobb and
Clayton Cobb.
Six of the eight cheerleaders
were introduced by Coach Hart, who thanked them for their fine efforts in
behalf of the team. The six present are Sue Stowers, Louise Hildreth, Barbara
Brantley, Barbara Price, Annie Joe Tranum and Bobbie Jean McIntyre. Two were
not able to be there, Jean Brown and Pattie Snowden.
Aggies Lose Openers To
Pensacola Tigers: Coach “Shorty” Sneed’s flashy Pensacola Tigers wrecked the
opening of the 1949-50 basketball season in Evergreen by outshooting Coach
Wendell Hart’s Evergreen Aggies in a pair of contests last Friday night in
Memorial Gym. The Tigers varsity won by a 49 to 23 count, and the B team
registered a 41-12 victory.
Dickey Bozeman topped the
scorers (in the varsity game) with a 10-point effort. Jeff Moorer and Gwyn Daniels
shared runner-up honors on the Aggie squad with four points each. Guerry Moorer
had three and Bobby Frank Snowden two to finish up the Evergreen scoring.
Cleveland Robinson and
William Stewart got five points each to pace the (B team) Aggies. Billy Watson
and Autrey Palmore sank a foul shot each for the other Evergreen points.

Did you know that Coach Gwin
Alderman, Repton High School, played basketball and baseball for three years at
Leakesville High School, Leakesville, Miss., under Coaches Bryant and Rawls,
both of whom were trained by Bernie Bierman of the University of Minnesota.
At Stetson University, LeLand
Fla., he played for two years under Robert Q. McQuillian, Physical Education
Director from University of Minnesota.
Mr. Alderman has served as
coach in Repton High School for seven years. During 1934-35 season, his
football team earned 105 points as against 109 points for their opponents. In
eight games, four were victorious for Repton.
Prospects for the basketball
season are fair despite the fact that the team will be practically all new
material.
Annex school expects an
interesting season in basketball under the direction of Mr. L.D. Kelly,
principal and coach. He played basketball at Thorsby Institute under Mr. Lefstead
for his high school career.
While in Troy State Teachers
College, he was taught by Gaumer, U. of Alabama, in Physical Education and
basketball coaching.
For five years, he directed
teams in Geneva County and enjoyed seeing his team win the county championship
one year and enter the finals the next year.
Annex’s team will have some
experienced players and will give a good account of itself in the coming
season.
The Burn Corn boys won their
first game last Friday afternoon, Dec. 14. They defeated Repton with a score of
16 to 13, with the honor going to Caine and Womack as making most goals. The
girls have organized a team and are going fine. They haven’t played a game with
anyone.

Northwestern University says that football playing causes insanity. That may
account for much that would be otherwise difficult to explain.

The camp hunt of some of our
Nimrods last week was hardly a success in the quantity of game.
Judge Walker wants something
under a dozen possums for Christmas. Parties having more possums than they need
will find it their interest to call early.
