Warriors beat Jackson 94 to
77: Senior forward Mark Watts scored 35 points to lead the Sparta Academy
Warriors to a 94-77 win over Jackson Academy, played Fri., Feb. 7, at Sparta.
Joining Watts in double figures were Wayne Cook with 17 points; Richard Weaver,
13 points; and Scott Brown, 10 points, according to Sparta Sports Information
Director Byron Warren Jr. Other Warriors scoring included Steven Gall, eight
points; Bryant Robinson, four points; Terry Conway, three points; Chip Gibson,
two points; and Sandy Salo, two points.
Senior Pam Brown scored 23
points and junior Kelly Booker added 12 points as the Lady Warriors whipped
Jackson Academy, 57-23.
Sparta outshoots Catherine 70
to 58: The Sparta Academy Warriors defeated Catherine Academy, 70-58, Tues.,
Feb. 4, at Sparta. Senior forward Mark Watts led the balanced Warrior offense
with 18 points. Senior Wayne Cook added 17 points and senior Scott Brown scored
12 points to complete the double figure scoring for the Warriors, according to
Sparta Sports Information Director Byron Warren Jr. Rounding out the scoring
for the Warriors were Bryant Robinson with eight points; Steven Gall, seven
points; Richard Weaver, six points; and Chip Gibson, two points.
The Lady Warriors defeated
the Catherine Lady Colts, 45-34. Senior Pam Brown scored 16 points and senior
Kimberli Griffin scored 10 points to lead the Lady Warriors.

Receiving trophies at the
Lyeffion High School Football Banquet given by the Quarterback Club on Jan. 28
were David Booker, Best Lineman; Stanley Wilson, Most Valuable Player; and Bo
O’Gwynn, Best Back. H.L. (Bubba) Scott, executive secretary, Alabama High
School Athletic Association, was the featured speaker.

Aggies Lose To Tigers And
Georgiana Five: The Evergreen High School Aggies dropped their third game of
the season to the Greenville squad here Friday night in a thrilling contest,
28-27. The Aggies took an early lead and held a decisive margin, 16-3, at the
halftime. The Tigers came back with the old do or die spirit to cut down that
margin with a flock of field goals. With about five seconds to play the score
of 27-26 in favor of Evergreen. Woodruff, Tiger guard, shot a long one to pull
the game out of the fire for the Camelia City quint. It was Evergreen’s game up
to this time.
Seeking revenge, the Aggies
journeyed to Georgiana for a return tilt with the Panthers. Again they were
disappointed, as the Panthers outshot them to hand them their fourth defeat of
the season, 31-17. Moorer led the local attack with seven points, closely
followed by Johnson with six. Their season record now stands 12 won, four lost.
Sports Shorts by Bobby
Bozeman: After conferring with the editor, and meeting with his approval, I am
writing this column for the first time. It is to give you the sports news of
local interest in short. I hope you will like it.
I saw where Windell Owens,
former Repton High School athlete, won the State Golden Gloves Championship in
the 175-pound bracket. Windell is a student at the University of Alabama now.
The Alabama State League
voted to dissolve for the duration of the war at a meeting held at Greenville
last week.
The Evergreen High School
cage squad did something out of the ordinary this year, when they whipped the
Lyeffion cagers twice. The locals have won 12 and lost four games to date.
Greenville beat them three times and Georgiana once.
I wonder if basketball won’t
be curtailed to some extent next year due to the lack of transportation? Most
teams in this section use cars or truck entirely, and they won’t roll without
tires.
